I used to be in shift-work where if you are late to start your shift your pay will be docked (e.g. if you are an hour late then you lose an hour's wage), BUT if you called in sick a couple of hours before your shift-time starts you will be paid out in full plus you have a day off. There are something like 10 sick days a year you can use.

So on a few occasions where I knew I was going to be late to start work I will just call in sick so that I still get a full day's pay, rather than losing an hour's wage if I showed up and actually worked.
