Not an excuse when Mike Martz is your offensive coordinator. More than enough experience there.
But then again Martz is known for designing effective plays but using them at the most inopportune times.
It's why he got fired from the Detroit Lions. Yup, not even good enough for Detroit!

Martz is an idiot..his somewhat offbeat game plans do throw the opposition for a loop, but then he goes overboard with his ego in thinking how clever he is and it ends up in plays like that.
I figure it was either that called play to a backup RB, or a end around or flee flicker as secondary options.

Also, Dorsey was noticable for the first time this season (I've watched them 5 times I believe). He looks like a guy who can be dominant if he can find some consistancy. The guy that has impressed me the most though is Brandon Carr. That kid is going to be a good corner in this league for a long time.
|
I was fine with the call to go for two. If the Chiefs lose the coin toss they probably don't even get a chance. The defense was banged up and tired. Herm did the right thing.
Dorsey must have been nursing an injury through the first half of the season. He did hurt his knee in camp, so maybe he wasn't 100% the last two months.
Both rookie corners have been playing well. Carr was hyped from mini-camp on as the starter for this season. Flowers came in after the injury to Surtain and has played pretty well.

It didn't help that the offense went three and out every series. I think the defense will be fine. There are a lot of young players on that D as well as a lot of injured starters. With the offense improving and the young players getting lots of playing time. This defense could be one to reckon with in a year or two. Unless Carl goes out and signs some washed up free agents (Napolean Harris...cough.....chough).

They had the ball on the 1 yard line with 45 seconds to go and barely ran 2 plays.
They should have spiked the ball immediately (35 seconds left) and then take 3 throws into the endone. Arizona would have probably taken another dumb penalty and they could then take up to 6 shots at the endzone.
|
I'd go with inexperienced QB, but I don't think Singletary was making that call, Martz was in charge at that point. I think this was a case where he had a play, but if he went to the line and saw it wouldn't work then he would spike it. I agree he wasted too much time.
And I don't think you can just assume AZ would take another penalty.
If Gore hadn't stumbled, the 49ers would have won, although a big reason they were still in that final drive was because of AZ's penalties.
The reason I'm most optimistic was the final few games under Nolan the team looked bad. I'm not a Nolan fan, but I don't think the whole issue was with his gameplan. I think he never had the players buy into him. I dare players to do that with Singletary. There was a fire to these guys I hadn't seen in a long time, and when they got down in the game they never let up. A few nice passes, a wicked QB run on 3-11. The passion seems to be there again.
The 49ers aren't a good team. With the blitzes coming straight through the A gaps seemingly at will there is a lot to work on. But it sure does look a lot better than earlier in the year.

Im not buyin it. They had players coming in from the sideline and the whole time Hill was giving the spike motion. It was absurd IMO.
Seriously...they wasted 23 seconds just being completely inept. What they needed to do was use the 11 guys on the field and spike the ball with 42 seconds left...THEN you make personel changes. Not before spiking it. Truly one of the most bizarre and baffling things I have ever witnessed in the NFL.
That being said...the niners have some real good pieces in place, and are likely to start showing better in the real near future. I am a huge Singletary fan but am not convinced he is what a head coach should be. Time will tell.

Yeah, I'm grasping, but it was just weird the way it played out. And I have seen a few games with different teams do exactly the same thing the past couple years. As long as you aren't spiking it on 4th down, it should be automatic.

I not saying he is Vince Lombardi, but give the man some time. There is always going to be a learning curve when somebody is put into a new position for the first time. Like you said, time will tell.

Hey guys. Big NFL fan here but I'm more of a reader than a poster.
I was in Arizona for MNF and thought I would share some pictures for anyone who is interested.
Hell of a game, well worth the price of admission. The brutal officiating, brutal play calling, and countless dumb penalties just added to the excitement. What a finish! The place went nuts.

^Good to see that NFL football is finally a hit in Pheonix. I went to a few Cards games at Sun Devil Stadium and was disgusted at how many opposing fans were in the stands. I'm not a Cardinals fan, I consider myself a Cardinals well wisher since I plan on being a season ticket holder when I retire down there in 30 years.

What a moronic play by the Jets there at the end to possibly hand the Pats a game they had no business winning.
Hmmm... last play of the game lets cover Moss with one guy when double teaming him has been working all game.
Whoever made that call should be fired on the spot

You saw how quickly the Patsies spiked the ball about 3 times on that last drive there.
49ers could learn from that!

I swear I'm the only guy on the planet who really likes Chris Collinsworth. I think he's great. As for the PBP guy, he definitely could be better. But anything's better than Brian Gumble, so I'm not complaining.

That game is why the Jets went after Favre. I would be remiss if I didnt add that Kris jenkins and Alan Faneca were also HUGE FA additions to that club. The leadership of those 3 is all to obvious as to the difference they have made in a club that didn't know how to win to what see these days. From 4-12 last year to 7-3 now? Remarkable turnaround.
I still shake my head at the Packers decision but thats all in the past now. At least with the way favre is playing they will get at least a 2nd rd pick out of the deal. Maybe a 1st if he can do the improbable and get them to the SB.

Are the Green Bay Packers the only ones that don't realize that Brett Farve is bigger than the game? Makes you shake your head.
