I've been more than happy with all the other episodes this season. I know what they were trying to do in this latest episode but it didn't work for me.

It was the least funny episode of the season so far, but it was well done and still good.

I was angry that the ending sequence wasn't a Troy & Abed in the Morning, but it was pretty solid.
I hope the season finale ending scene is a pre-shot Troy & Abed in the Morning, I miss it so.

This x100.
They did too many dumb/weird things with Chang and got the Dean too involved/made him TOO crazy and weird. The characters were perfect in the first two seasons. That's probably been the strongest point in season 5 so far.

What happened to the Dean after it started? Did I miss him falling into the lava?

I don't think they showed the dead fall into the lava. But what the episode did do was allow the dean to understand and get swept up in the school wide game for an outrageous prize.
He was on the outside looking in trying to stop the paintball games that got too far out of hand. This time he jumped in with the rest of the student population. Interesting, yet subtle growth on the show.

The episode wasn't bad. Not my favourite of the season, but man was Chang's Bear Down for Mid-Terms freak out amazing.
Also I did not watch any of the gas leak year, so I had no idea what was really happening at the end with Abed and that girl.

He met her working the coat check at a party in the last season and they liked each other/started a relationship.
Of course, the writing being what it was last year, they didn't bring it up again after that episode. Hence "You never called" "That was the gas leak year."

It was exactly what Britta mentioned earlier in the episode. He has instant chemistry with a new girl, then we never see her again.
In the episode she was on last year, Annie and Shirley both tried to set him up on a date for a dance and he enlisted the coat check girl's help in juggling the two girls during the dance. Of course, the coat check girl was the one he ended up having chemistry with. Then, she was never heard from again.
Did everyone catch the news crawl on the tv when Prof. Hickey was watching the story about the bear attack?

I didn't need to - TVtropes caught it for me . I hope they give us lots of jokes about it from now on.
I liked the episode...it wasn't going to match up for the last two episodes in terms of quality and it almost felt like they wanted to shoehorn all their guest stars into the episode, but the entire Britta/Abed side was fun.

Has any other show openly mocked itself for having a really terrible season? I'm loving the gas leak year references, almost makes suffering through that 4th season worth it

Latest episode felt a lot like Mixology Certification (the bar episode from Season 2). It's the type of episode you'll probably not want to see too often, but (I think) they do a great job in the execution.
Abed's reason for being handcuffed in Hickey's office felt a little contrived (when is he THAT far out of reality as to aim straight towards the drawings?), but that's forgiven a bit since both sides of the story were pretty good. And Chang being the entire comedy team was fun.
It'll probably fall into the love it or hate it pile as most of the more melodramatic Community episodes are, but count me in the "loved it" side.

Best moment was the post-credits bit with the dean and John Oliver. So glad that he's back in the show
