lol I never said I know more about the player than Conroy and I’m certainly not basing my opinion on hockeydb stats.
There are plenty of analytical models out there that project probabilities on what a prospect will become in the future. Feel free to look a few of them up.
Historically, players of a similar ilk to Grushnikov don’t pan out to be much. I’d love for him to be an outlier and become the next Chris Tanev, but the odds of that just aren’t in his favor.

I am super happy with this trade. Two good positioned picks coming in, and a prospect for Tanev who has played his best hockey and is going to decline. We have seen some decline already this season in Calgary. I wish him the best, he is a warrior, a leader, and will help Dallas.
Calgary has cashed him in at max value. Zero chance Tanev fetches more than a second rounder, so this is a steal for Calgary.
This sets the market for the Hanifin situation. I hope he stays in Calgary, but if he doesn’t, Calgary should get a haul for him. A first, and a top tier prospect for sure.

Lets look at what we know for sure about the Grusher. Picked second round by a team with an excellent draft record. He is playing in the A as a twenty year old for the same team so the obviously they see enough to at least try it( maybe someone who watches him can comment on usage) He has the size and skating for the nhl. He is very good defensively and can make a good pass.
A lot if the tools are there. If he becomes a defensive tower for the bottom pair for the next decade i see that as a win. Everyone constantly complains about shedding draft picks for bottom of the roster players and if anything comes from the second round pick its not a bad trade at all.

You said Conroy was either lying or the scouts are bad at their jobs. Or, mAybe the third option is they actually watched him play and see something they like.

How does that make you a finalist when we don't want what you offered?

I feel like hockey in general is starting to discount the value of very good defensive defensemen these days. This kid looks to be great at the most important part of his position defence. He also appears to skate very well. I have a great feeling about him. Also the character seems to be off the charts which never hurts.

Also believe that dallas is as good as anyone and can definitely be a Stanley cup finalist so that third isnt out of the realm of possibilities

LeBrun on insider trading said one team did offer a 1st round pick for Tanev but it also came with a player with term left on their contract coming back to the Flames which did not interest Calgary.

Oh that had to be the Leafs
Would guarantee they were trying to pawn the Reaves contract off as well.

Well crap. That’s the kind of use of cap space you’d like to see.
Where are all the posters who claimed the Flames had all the cap space they’d ever need? The Leafs first rounder won’t even be all that bad hopefully.
I just hope they take on some salary in the offseason in exchange for draft picks. I don’t want to hear about what could have been or the offer isn’t good enough. Wasted cap space is just that. A waste.

I'd rather have two assets than take one asset and a bad contract. Especially for this draft where people are saying there is not much difference in prospects in late round 1 going into round 2.

don't know how to link it, but find Jim Nill's press conference on the Stars webpage. Glowing comments on Grushnikov

A 1st and Ryan Reaves was what went down to the wire? Is that was Treliving is telling people?

It's okay to be fine with the return, and it's okay to be underwhelmed with the return. Apparently it is what the market was, but it's not more heinous for people to believe that Grush is not likely to make it, then for people to decide that just because Dallas drafted and liked him he absolutely has to be a diamond in the rough. They have hits and misses just like everyone else, player development is never always on the team anyway.
Conroy obviously did the best he thought he could, and since Tanev has been available for a while, you can't say he jumped the gun. Whether Calgary does anything with the assets they got will be a long time deciding.

Tell me what the term was. And how much the space was. Then we can discuss it.

lol dude, stop putting words in my mouth. I said I didn’t think it was true. It’s not even a quote from Conroy, it’s a quote from Jeff Marek.
Obviously they like something about him, stop being obtuse.
You can think Grushnikov is worth a first round pick all you want, I think that’s insane though.
As far as the scouts go? Well it’s the same people that took William Stromgren and Topi Ronni over Logan Stankoven and Lane Hutson so the second round drafting hasn’t exactly been good lately.

The same scouts that picked out Stankoven as a second round pick picked Grushnikov one spot after him.

Lol. You crack me up.
It’s all speculation. And who knows, the return may have been a first, player with term and more. If it was the Leafs, they don’t have many bad contracts with really long term. Reaves would have been a no brainer.
We’ll see how the Flames use their cap space and revisit this I’m sure.
