Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his Conservative MPs pinned themselves against the walls of their barricaded caucus room after piling furniture against the door to prevent a gunman from entering during Wednesday's chaotic attack on Parliament Hill.

Several Conservative sources spoke of a terrifying 15-minute period when they stripped flags off flagpoles to arm themselves while the gunman exchanged fire with security forces mere metres away.

Conservative caucus sources told CBC News they heard the shooting and threw things against the doors to barricade the doorway in the caucus room.

The prime minister was in the room at the time.

One cop badly injured as the attacker hit him in the head; the other officer hit in the arm. A bystander was hit by a stray bullet. There are videos and stuff of it if you google queens hatchet attack.

Why keep your head in the sand? The message is already out there and a Canadian news media have even posted the article. It's not like i pulled this from an ISIS site

This message should encourage fence sitters on the ISIS issue and support the Canadian gov't and it's forces as they engage ISIS

These people are real and we shouldn't stick fingers in our ear going "la la la". IF you keep pretending you don't hear their threats, you're only just encouraging them to get your attention with a much worse event.

Nobody has their head in the sand and nobody is ignoring their threats.

The message hasn't changed much since day 1 and the media repeating their message over and over again only gives notice to ISIS that anything they want heard will be printed in the media and on video.

The messages could also encourage those looking for a cause to join them in their fight against the world.

2 veterans up here in Edmonton were doing the same thing today. It was good to see.

When I saw the veterans at the memorial outside of Edmonton City Hall yesterday, I went out of my way to walk by and nod to acknowledge my support to them. The older fellow was very emotional about being there.

I was proud that they were.

I hope the overpasses are crowded and flag draped like usual. Last time there were bikers following a safe distance behind as well.

About a week ago I made a small donation to the Canadian Legion and I just received a poppy bumper sticker and thank you letter in the mail. I am usually not a bumper sticker person, but that one is getting slapped right on there.

Why the best response to the Ottawa shootings is to open Parliament to all Canadians—not to fortify it

...Even as events still unfolded in a confused downtown, the pressure on officials and politicians to “fix” security, to ensure this could never happen again, began to mount. But how could you ever truly prevent something like this? A mentally ill man, enflamed with the zeal of a new mania, running amok with a gun? You simply can’t.

You could build higher fences around Parliament Hill. But then the next one will shoot up a parade. You could put a rifle on every street corner. Yet the next one will use a grenade. You could pat down everyone coming into Downtown Ottawa. Then the next one will attack Rideau Hall.

It is hard to say and harder to accept. But there is nothing you can do to stop the fanatic. Eavesdrop on everyone? Read all our email? Bug every mosque? Armoured police vans? More metal detectors? We have seen this. And all of it, ultimately, is just as ineffective as the thin, fluttering yellow police tape which appeared overnight across Ottawa.

For Canadian security officials and politicians, it is almost impossible to accept this. They are under a heavy burden. Something must be done. Something. Unfortunately, the easiest and most instinctive thing for them to do is close something down. A street. A memorial. A gate. A city. Shut it down. Lock it up. No access.

It is understandable. Almost natural. But it is wrong. Encircling the national War Memorial with short metal fences protects no one. And worse, it actually makes us less secure, more frightened, less unified.

The morning after the horrific Oslo terrorist attack three years ago, the Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg declared that the only proper response was “more democracy, more openness, but not naivety.” That is what Canada needs now. That is what has made Canada great. It is not the height of our walls nor the impregnability of our buildings, it is our openness. As Paul Wells poetically wrote, “you can’t keep a country in lockdown, not while preserving the things that made the country worth having in the first place. Much like its capital precinct, Canada is a big open field, too.”

Before we demand that all the other potential terrorist suspects are rounded up, let us remember that it was the very issue of individual freedoms and the arbitrary seizure of “freemen” that led England’s barons to rise up and demand the Magna Carta, the beginning of the constitutional system that Canada cherishes so much. Ironically, by trying to safeguard our parliament, we would be undermining the ideals upon which it was founded...

Its ok to be open, and I encourage that, but at the same time its also important to be vigilant. These scumbags are out there and they don't care if we keep the parliament open or not. People are still thinking of terrorists as the so called freedom fighters who wanted to effect change via fear and violence.

These people don't really care about effecting change, they're a different breed of animal. They just want to kill people, and create panic not political change. They know that the government isn't going to bring in Sharia Law because of their actions, or hand over power.

this is violent acts to achieve a violent end.

so absolutely I agree, show them that we're not intimidated or scared. However while we don't need to round them up and throw them in prison, you have to make sure that they know that we care, and that their freedom basically hangs by a thread based on their actions.
