I am very disappointed that Helen Mowat got more votes than me, and I'm not sure how that happens! At least she didn't win though, that would be a problem for all of us IMO.
Thanks again!

Having some experience with election campaigns and campaign planning, I think it's all about visibility. Since all of you trustee candidates are anonymous randoms as far as voters are concerned, I truly believe what cost you was the fact that Taylor spent enough money to put up those huge boards at 24th and Anderson and 24th and Southland (elsewhere too?) and to keep them there for a couple months. Very high traffic areas, very big signs - the name sticks in people's heads when they go to pick a random candidate. I think this counts for a lot more than pressing the flesh in anonymous contests. Your signs went up pretty late and were tiny in comparison. I think it's as simple as that. You know better than I what the costs involved are, but I think for Taylor that was money very well spent...

I would have to agree. Taylor and Mowat had some big signs out there, and I gotta think that did something. Taylor had the first signs up on Canyon Meadows Drive, and it was the big ones Vlad is mentioning. Styles and Heggerud I actually saw very little of compared to Vic, so I was surpised that they did so well.

Some ass named Victor Lough left a bunch of his goddamn 'Pick Vic' signs under my windshield wipers. No way I'd vote for a such a jerk.
Unconscionable behaviour that, what, with the windshield flyers and all.

Ya, I think that you guys are right. Its easier in hindsight to look back and think that I should've spent the $5k-8k to put up bold signs at the same time. I mentioned in a thread (might be this one) that if I lost it would change my mind about campaigning and how to win and this does that. My thought was that no one meets a candidate, let alone a school trustee candidate, so my spending a lot of time pressing the flesh would have people remember me at the polling station.
Frankly that might work for better known people, but not for an unknown as you explain. It's also incredibly time consuming! I guess my false sense of security came from my standing on the corner waving at cars and feeling like almost everyone was waving back/honking/giving me a thumbs up so they would remember that and mark their ballot accordingly.
I do think that there were/are a number of factors though. I was also shocked that Styles did so well, but its hard to know how people decide or why they vote the way that they do in general for these types of "lesser" positions.

That was intended as a last minute, last name you see and remember at the poll sort of reminder. In hindsight (and for a few reasons) I don't think that I would recommend that again...

My dad had talked to you at the train station, and was really impressed that someone was out there trying to meet people and talk to them. I think this strategy does work to win some peoples votes...
Me, hubby, and our parents all voted for you! We were rooting for you all night!

I dont know if that would work or not. Unfortunately I dont live in that riding so it wasnt an option to vote for you, but that might also be a consideration.
Where you're pressing flesh is important, who knows where some of these people live.
Anyways, I'd have voted for you were it an option for me. Better luck next time man.

Thanks for running Slava! I wish I was in either 11 or 13 to support you.
It is a real commitment to put your name on the ballot and we need as many voices as possible to stand up and engage citizens. Hopefully you'll do it again!

I always wondered whether or not school trustee election results were more or less a result of 'machine' politics than by good old campiagning. My mother used to work at the seperate board and got pretty high up where she would regularily attend board meetings and she used to tell us stories about the odd moonbat trustee that would get elected because church groups and/or community groups would get out the vote for their special interest candidate and they would be prove very hard to remove in ensuing elections. There was even rumor of them purposely nominating 'dummy candidates' to split the vote among the opposition.

There was a former client who was a Catholic Board Trustee, and he was bat-shart crazy. Much nuttier and much more dangerous than the Mowat woman...

Unfortunately too many people vote randomly for trustee positions. I know that I wasn't educated enough to vote in my area so I declined the ballot. I didn't want to vote based on the number of signs I saw but unfortunately there are many who do.
In my opinion to run a small trustee campaign, it is all about visibility. There is no way that you can get to enough doors to talk to everyone. Aldermanic and mayoral campaigns usually have larger teams that can do fairly organized drops and door knocks. And people are more familiar with the roles of aldermen than trustee. Unfortunately, people don't educate themselves on all the races but are probably too embarrassed to refuse the trustee ballot. As such, I would throw up a whole bunch of signs and do waving...if possible, raise some money and do a targeted lit drop.

Well, lets go with that then. I would've won hands down were it not a case where the fix was in!
I do know a guy who ran years ago and he said that there was a message going around to keep him out of office. I have no idea how you could prove that short of physical evidence, but it could be true I guess.
In reality though I just lost this on name recognition, pure and simple. It sucks, and is not really what I was hoping for, but I'm already done feeling sorry for myself and will move along to complain about the politicians who did get elected yesterday as soon as they annoy me again!

FWIW I voted for ya, even though I had no clue what your platform was, or what you stood for. It was more..."Hey its that guy from CP!!" good enough for me. Check.

BTW, 2809 votes is a pretty darn good result. 2809 people took time out of their busy lives to vote for you. That is certainly something to be proud of.
