Makes me miss the prevalence of the Cosa Nostra.

Well, the pre-Castellano era.

Frankly I don't care if the Hells Angels kill off their own as long as they don't harm any innocent bystanders.

Great, and now BBS takes out the rainbow flag and parades around declaring our love.

The people 3 doors down that got broken into had a conversation with the cops who mentioned there is definitely someone tearing through Bridgleand (mostly just within a couple blocks of me) a bunch of Renfrew, and I think possibly some Crescent Heights as well. The number of B&E's have gone way up.

I guess the fact that there are a couple monster houses under construction on the street isn't helping because the sound of a door getting kicked in is easy to blend with all of the hammering and various noise from the construction sites.

Yeah, when instead of hard drugs it was just smuggling booze and every gangster was a gentleman who wore a suit and hat. I think movies romantisized the mafia lifestyle a little too much. Gangs have always been brutal and violent.

Its a fine establishment, I've been there twice. Once it was lit on fire, and the second time there was a full on parking lot gang war going on. Good times. Good times.

One of my favourite parts of the Sopranos is in their illustration of the brutal negative effects that organized crime externalizes on, often random, upstanding members of society.

this "I don't care as long as they don't harm innocent people" is such a simplistic viewpoint.

Anyone think that guy's neighbours haven't been harmed by this?

Nothings perfect. But if you have to put up with organized crime, why not go with the professionals?

There were a lot less innocent victims in the golden era of the mob than there is with every uneducated doofus that can pull a trigger now-a-days.

So all we have to do is a simple reversion of society then!

Well sheesh, lets get on with it!

Or at the very least, maybe the mentality?

More like revision of history. Plenty of "innocent" bystanders were killed during the Prohibition as well as many more open and much more violent gang wars, brutal murders, and institutionalized corruption than you see today.

I was attacked by a machete/bat wielding asian gang because a kid in town couldn't fight his own battles.

Ain't no guido bugging me.

I think the best way to deal with the Asian gangs is to install a DDR machine at every bus stop.

And no, Bonavista Downs houses do not have lake access.

Is there even an Italian Mafia in Calgary? I'm sure the mafia terrorized many innocent people in their day as well. There's no "better" way of doing organized crime. Its all based on fear and intimidation, period. If you get on their wrong side, no matter which group or race, you're in trouble.

Do gangs of older people count as "shady?" Deer Valley mall is pretty quiet and a lot of the seniors like to hang out there.

I know people who have worked in 'mobbed up' establishments, even if they weren't 'mobbed up' themselves. Not in Calgary, but if they are in a rural town 1/1000th of the size then I would do that foolish assumption thing.

I would agree that no organized crime at all would be the ultimate answer. Since that is as illogical as hoping for world peace, I would take an organization like the Cosa Nostra over MS-13 (just an example).

And with no factual proof whatsoever I will still take the stand that civilians were much safer during the golden age of the mob (50's-1980). EDIT: As opposed to what we have to deal with now.
