Then you have good taste. But that is not my favorite song of hers.

I think her voice was in her prime about the time she sang "I Love you Porgy", one of the songs from the Gershwin musical, Porgy and Bess.

Wow. They are a really interesting act! I like how a classical instrument and hip hop intertwine.

I had been trying to figure out who's voice it was atht she reminds me of...and it just struck me.

Karen Carpenter.

Lot's of people make fun of the Carpenters and her early demise to a nasty medical condition...but IMO she had the most elegant velvety voice i have ever heard to this day....this lady comes very very close IMO.

Amazing stuff.

I would agree except for one thing; this is a talent contest. That's the whole point; they put up a sign saying "you have talent, come show us".

It's not like they pick random people off the street and tell them they're worthless unless they have a specific kind of talent.

I would never go onto a talent contest because my talents aren't along those lines. My voice is adequate at best, my instrument playing is mechanical, etc.. If I went onto the show to demonstrate my talents I would fully expect to be heckled off stage, and I should be.

Though I do agree talking just about how she looks was cringe worthy, if I had been her I probably would have been offended later when I thought about what they actually said.

Am I the only one that has a hard time believing this story? It's like the old saying goes if it's to good to be true than it probably is.

There is way to much oversight when it comes to reality television, people think for some reason the word "reality" is presented at face-value and that everything on these shows (American Idol, Britain's Got Talent, etc.) is in fact real. When the reality is that these are TV shows and the point of them is to get ratings. Which the producers of this show have done beautifully with his Susan Boyle person.

Can she sing? Absolutely

Is she really a 47 year old women whose never been married let alone kissed? I highly doubt it.

Yes, this is what I'm unsettled with. The only difference between her and the usual plastic product of these shows is that they've gone for the angle of "hey, let's promote the ugly duckling!" instead of the usual pretty boy/girl that ends up winning. And worse, they show their contempt for her in the process of creating that "product".

Well said. That is certainly a bothersome issue.

I still prefer to suspend my criticism and enjoy her story at face-value though. The onslaught of global media today means that we often hear so many bad things that occur, that it is nice to hear something good. Even if it may be somewhat fabricated.

They had a good discussion on this is CBC Morning...

(1) If you are cynical enough to believe that this has been staged completely for the ratings, then why aren't you cynical enough to believe that she was in on it?
(2) The people that usually watch the first few rounds sometimes are not the same audience that watch the last few rounds. The people that watch the first auditions typically are watching *FOR* the car crash. That says more about humanity/society than our appreciation of an unexpected talent.

I have no problem with a success story, I have already said that Susan Boyle has a very pleasant voice. There is no way I will go along with some posters who claim she has the best voice ever, based on 2 songs she has sung? That does not keep things in perspective whatsoever.

You have to question why the "ugly duckling" gets promoted and then someone like Connie Talbot gets bypassed.

Here she is singing "Ava Maria", the Bach Gunod version, much more technically difficult to sing than the Schubert version.

And here she is singing "You raise me up", the song made famous by Josh Groban.

Here's Susan's first recording. Wild Horses. It was originally a Rolling Stone's song.

That duet was very nice indeed, their voices really do compliment one another.

Now Susan's voice does not have the same range or fullness that Elaine's has, but for this song, they each sang the parts that were best suited for their voices.

BUMP

Not Susan Boyle related but BGT related. Scott Oake's (From HNIC) son was on Britains Got Talent this year representing Canada well. Check it out, pretty cool:

Fata but good for Darcy especially after what happened to his brother. Also coming to this thread from the existential crisis one, I had half assumed Susan Boyle was dead!

Nice. Bump a four year old thread for something that was posted four days ago. The search feature works fairly well.
