Looked like a nice set-piece to stick in the movie. Letterman baits him time after time and he just rolls right along. That's hardly a meltdown. Either a drug induced semi-comatose performance or just some more brillant acting and I think the latter more likely.
The part that convinced me of your line of thinking is when Letterman asked him about the film being based on the book.... and he said he didn't know.

Of course he knows. I've followed his career some (not quite since Space Camp) and know from watching other interviews that he researches like a madman for roles. He's read the book, probably multiple times.

I eagerly await the day when Affleck (who is Joaquin's brother-in-law by the way) releases his film.

Besides, did anyone really think that his rapping in that other thread wasn't a total put on?

I'm confused... Did I not post just after Towers last post on Page 4? My post seems to have been deleted, and I did not get an explanation.
Or am I just going crazy?

Your post had some pretty heavy accusations in it, probably why it was deleted.

Hhmm, yes I suppose I speculated a bit about Joaquin... however the stuff about the cult is well documented.

Your post had accusations that could get the site in trouble. Please don't post stuff like that on this site. I apologize - I meant to PM you but phone rang and then I forgot.

Well as one person mentioned early on, this kind of stuff does appear to happen on Dave's show more than any other. Time online came out with a top ten article of awkward interviews on The Late Show because of this incident.

Interestingly enough Kaufman himself had a stunt on The Late Show (I had known this from the movie Man in the Moon but had forgotten since) with wrestler Jerry Lawler, making it even more likely that this JP incident was all just a set up.

Some good entertainment on this list. Forgot all about that Madonna interview. Funny that it doesn't seem as shocking anymore, times sure have changed.

Oh yeah, and that Drew Barrymore one was just hot!

Actually, it was Late Night w/ David Letterman as he hosted the show before Conan O'Brien. Dave thought that since he was best buddies with Johnny Carson that he would be a shoe-in and next in line to inhereit the Tonight Show and he got majorly pissed off that they passed him up for Jay Leno.

18 years on (yikes!!!) and now Jay is getting his own show 1 hour earlier, Conan is getting the Tonight Show, it's going to be Late Night w/Jimmy Fallon...and Letterman is still getting painfully awkward interviews.

Er yeah, Late Night, that's what I meant. I knew he was never on the Tonight Show. (and of course Late Show is something else entirely)

Still some great clips there though!

He's at it again. This time, he apparently jumps off stage to attack a heckler.

It'd be sweet if the heckler was played by Bruce Campbell.

I thought it was a re-run, but I'll tape it now knowing it's not.

Edit- Actually I think it is a re-run. Shaw guide says so anyway.
