You're right. Let's keep Bush in office.

You do realize that in a historical sense that isn't true, right? Homosexuals have been persecuted quite often throughout history, frequently with the imprimatur of the state on such actions. In Nazi germany gay men were sent to concentration camps, registered as sexual deviants, forced to wear pink triangles on their sleeves, and eventually around 55,000 of them were murdered by the state.

Hitler persecuted the gays, I would suggest that's pretty close. That's just the most obvious example. Many people don't know, but before Hitler rose to power, Germany was the most progressive nation when it came to gay culture and tolerance.
As I mentioned, being able to hide it, or being of any race makes it hard to 'round them up' in ways races have been during darker times of history, but gay people have definitely been persecuted, and very violently. I don't know how you can say otherwise.
Yes being able to hide it helps a lot, I won't argue that. And that's why I'm saying that if you are 'open' about it, you've become a visible minorty.

Being gay in Nazi Germany got you a trip to a concentration camp.
But even if what you said were 100% true, would it matter? I think we can all agree they've been discriminated against and have had to fight for equality.

They have a better chance of doing a good job than the Democrats, especially under Obama.
I know it was cool to vote him in because he was black and people somehow think that makes them and the country "progressive" but Presidents should have a lot more to offer than the color of their skin.
Unfortunately for Obama being black doesn't do much for him now that the campaigning is over.

To clarify--in my view it's not quite right to say that it "helps" to be able to hide it. To be forced to hide your sexual orientation in order to secure preferment in society is a kind of oppression.

Please enlighten us with your no-doubt detailed and well-thought-out solutions to this economic crisis that the GOP would somehow come up with in spite of not having been able to do so at any point during the past 2 years. Or if all you have to offer is snark, I'm pretty sure there are some kids on your lawn that need some fist-waving.

Agree, just saying, it can be used to avoid violence.
Still sucks obviously.
EDIT: I've advocated gay rights on this board many times and was making my case that they ARE a visible minority. I was just responding to the argument of being able to 'hide' it to avoid violence easier than a person of color could, which is true to a small extent.
But yes, being forced to hide your true self is definitely a type of persecution.

And what did McCain/Palin have to offer? Fear, pseudo-science, intolerance.

I know you think the guy is a god based on his skin color but some people expect more out politicians than coming off as "cool", especially guys who have already been annointed the greatest President ever before doing one single thing to deserve any praise let alone that kind of crap.

I think it's just a typical resistance to all the hype this event has received for the last month.
If someone keeps telling you "It's amazing! It's amazing!" eventually your amazement wears off and you inevitably say "Well... it's not that amazing." And if the hype continues beyond that eventually you get pretty grouchy and, ultimately, turn into Moon.

So you think the only reason he won is because of the colour of his skin?
Do you actually repeat this drivel in general public settings, where people actually have a chance to respond to you in person... or do you just save these bombshells for the safety of the internet?
(...and no, I'm not talking about "physical" safety... I'm just talking about a real world setting, where people are actually held accountable for the things they say)

Well, maybe if McCain wasn't so interested in style vs substance (Palin) we wouldn't be having this conversation. I don't think the "cool" factor had much to do with it. Among other things, the thought of Palin running the country should something happen to McCain was pretty scary.
Whoever inherited this mess of an economy was going to be in tough. Obama has an uphill battle for sure. I wish him luck.

I'm not a violent guy, but you're the type of jackass who would turn me into one.
As I've already stated in this thread, I don't give a rat's ass about the color of his skin. Yes, it's a great moment for black people, but I like the guy because he's not an arrogant knob with 1/3 of an active brain cell and a family-funded agenda. You don't know anything about me.

I think that skin color was a big reason, but more part of the whole "Obama is cool and different. Voting for him shows that I am progressive and that race isn't an issue" type of feeling that was present in many voters.
Why would I have a problem saying it in public? I don't spend a lot of time talking about Barack Obama in public so I wouldn't say I walk around telling people that I am not a fan of Obama or that he is unlikely to live up to the hype, but I certainly don't care about some sort of "safety of the internet" BS.
I would gladly repeat this in "public."
