Hopefully enough people vote against the front license plate.

I'm almost tempted to recommend a good old fashioned CP poll Jihad. The only problem with those is that they essentially nullify any positive qualities within any given poll and would likely eliminate any possibility of the poll being taken seriously.
I made my feelings known, hopefully enough others do in a reasonable and rational manner.

I have seen the plat number COK 411 before. It was even funnier because it was a girl driving.

I wonder if anybody has WTC-911? I know I've seen a few WTC- plates around, but not that particular one.
On a related note, my buddy got the plate DYX-241. Now, how would YOU pronounce that?

Given they were initially discontinued as a cost saving measure, I really don't see how it could suddenly become a money grab...

Well, they didn't have photo radar back then. There are arguements to have front licence plates but chalk me down as one that does not support the idea.

Please explain how a front plate is at all useful for photo radar.

Not only can you be tagged by photo radar with the front plate but you can be identified as the driver thus obtaining demerits.

You can point the camera towards the approaching traffic (like they do with manned speed traps), so that by the time the drivers see the van, they've already been photographed.
As it is now, if you see the van on the side of the road, you slow down as you pass it, then speed back up once you're out of view.
Photo radar was relatively new in 1991 when the front plates were removed, and the vans had to be retrofit to take photos of passing traffic rather than approaching traffic.

Now is not back then, and we already have photo radar, so I remain confused as to how this suddenly becomes a money grab.

Leave Alberta's plates alone!!! <wimper> Leave them alone!!!!
Seriously, if we need to change them, then I suggested a string of 6 or 7 characters instead of the ABC-123 template we have now. Also don't know why they can't recycle plates that have not been used for over 10 year or some reasonable time period.

Photo radar has been around longer than sans front plate. I remember getting dinged in '88, just after it was introduced.

Why does anyone care if the front license plate is a money grab? it's not as though the money is used to fund the police xmas party. If the money is going into the police service that funds their ability to do their jobs better ... what's so bad about that?

Because it affects everybody in the province who owns a newer vehicle. New manditory front plates mean I have to buy a bracket to mount the stupid thing.
So they are asking me to spend my own money to make it easier for them to excecute a cash grab; and take more money from me.

Your right, I thought it was a little longer back but they got rid of the front place in 91. I wasn't quite olded enough to drive then, so I just didn't really think about it. Thanks for setting the record straight.

it also means i have to get holes drilled into the front grill of my car because it was never designed to hold a front plate. i'll be very pissed if this becomes law

Abide by the laws and there won't be a problem.
I find it ironic that we have one thread going talking about how horrible Cgy drivers are, and another mad because the police may have a more efficient way to uphold laws that are supposed to keep people safe. And idiot drivers at bay.
And I would presume that if they do add the law they'd grandfather existing cars, it would only apply to new cars going fwd.

I believe there are red light cameras in the US that take the photo from the front, thus making it possible to convict the driver, not the vehicle owner. Front photo radar also exists. On that note, this won't increase the amount of money so can't really be seen as a cash grab. If anything, it would help alleviate some people from speeding in fear of actually getting convictions on their licenses.
I just don't see this happening based solely on the fact that existing vehicles would need upgrading and the public backlash would be enormous. Unless of course they are willing to cough up reimbursements for people to become compliant or have some kind of grandfathering program in effect.
