When I lived in LA back in the day, there was a great classic rock station there that would do a top 1000 (maybe 500) countdown every Labor Day weekend (maybe Memorial Day!). It was based on listener's lists and people in the industry who had some association with the station whether official or just had been guests and liked the idea. In any case, I was there for 3 of these things and this song was #1 twice. Probably my third favorite Stones song (behind Wild Horses and Angie) but absolutely brilliant. Hotel California and Stairway to Heaven were the other songs in the top 3 all 3 years. It was a blast to listen to the countdown.
I've thought about trying to do something similar here at calgarypuck. Of course, we couldn't play the list and count it down, but it might be fun to form an "Official Calgarypuck.com top 500 Classic Rock songs of all time" list. If anyone is interested in doing something like this PM me...if there's enough interest I might just try and get it started. It would just be a matter of setting a few limitations (otherwise you'll have people submitting "In Da Club" as a choice) and everyone submitting their personal top XX list.
In any case, great song and great choice because it doesn't get it's due even on classic rock radio.

Peace Frog - The Doors
Drawing Flies - Soundgarden
I'm just going to throw this out there.....every Soundgarden song except 'Spoonman' is underrated.

Two Gunslingers, Tom Petty
He's got so many others too...Listen to her heart, Even the Losers, Shadow of a Doubt, Honey Bee, Dark of the Sun, Stop Draggin My Heart Around, You Wreck Me, Here Comes My Girl
My favorite Petty tune is "You Got Lucky"...also underrated.

ok i just heard Jonny Cash's cover of Rusty Cage, and even though the most attention gets paid to his cover of Hurt this one is even better. god that man was talented
I don't listen to the radio much anymore but when I left Calgary and it's probably still true today but nobody seemed to play Janis Joplin, except for Me and Bobby McGee . Maybe she's just a bit too real for commercial radio but, in my eyes, she is one of the finest singers ever.
Speaking of the Man in Black, this is my all time favorite song of his, I guess this video was made after he died, anyone know the story here?
Johnny Cash - God's Gonna Cut You Down
Do It Again - Steely Dan
Redemption Song - Bob Marley
Purple Rain - Prince
Ignorance Is Bliss - Living Color
Get Up - Van Halen
The Working Hour - Tears For Fears
Superunknown - Soundgarden
Knock Me Down - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Step Into The Realm - The Roots
Lie In Our Graves - Dave Matthews Band
Warning - Green Day
Speed of Sound - Coldplay

Someone mentioned Old Man by Neil Young. I forgot how much I like that song.
Someone pointed to the unplugged album by Nirvana. I totally agree. Some of their best work is there. Unfortunately for them, they'll forever be known by just a couple of songs when in reality, all three of their albums were cover to cover listenable. Same with GNR. Too bad. They join the ranks of some really good classic bands who only ever get the same, crappy/catchy tune played over and over. And unfortunately for GNR, the ones that get played aren't even as good as the many more that don't.
RHCP - I could have lied
The Doors - Riders on the storm... The instrumental part I can listen to ever and over.
Metallica - For Whom The Bell Tolls (again, the instrumental)(first 2 minutes)
And I suspect that I'm just not listening to the right radio stations, but I didn't hear any Gordon Lightfoot at all except for Edmund Fitzgerald. One day I heard Sundown while cruisning in a buddy's ride. I immediately purchased his Complete Greatest Hits cd and I like the whole cd, but I specifically like 5 or so songs enough to add them to my mp3 player and my computer playlist.
Gordon Lightfoot - Stay Loose
Led Zeppelin - Baby Im gonna leave you
Aerosmith - Kings & Queens
Chillipeppers - Parallel Universe
Supertramp - Crime of the Century
Sublime- Date Rape
Edit: No one mentioned Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird
Not so much underrated just an amazing song..

First of all, I think Ten Years After is the most underrated rock band of all time. When it comes to blues driven rock, nobody touches them. Not even the Stones.
They did a 16 minute song called Help Me on their double album, Live At The Fillmore East, 1970, that still absolutely blows my mind. Around the 10 minute mark in this song Alvin Lee transcends reality and achieves nirvana. Everyone on the planet deserves to hear this song. If you like classic electric blues driven rock and haven't heard this song, check it out. You can find it on iTunes.
