Ugh, Alfonzo is terrible. Used to be a solid player...but not anymore. That would be a very bad move to sign him.

Well, it happened:
The Toronto Blue Jays have signed infielder Edgardo Alfonzo to a minor league contract.

The former all-star will report to the double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Friday.

So he's not joining the big team immediately. Any info on who will be taking Adams' spot now?

Makes sense. He's gotta get into game shape.

The Jays website, as well as the Star, says that 32 year-old minor league journeyman Luis Figueroa will join the team. He's played in just four MLB games, and that was five years ago with the Pirates... but he did have a decent spring training with Toronto. I would hope that he'll serve as a seldom used back-up until Adams (or someone else) re-joins the team.
The move means that the Jays will have to drop someone from their 40-man roster (despite having a two other minor league middle infielders already on their 40-man). They had to do that last weekend, and ended up losing prospect Miguel Negron on waivers in the process.

True, but although I think Negron was a #1 pick a while ago, there didn't seem to be much disdain at his loss....seemed like he had stalled a fair bit, and he was pick way back wasn't he? In the mid-1990s ('94 or so I think)?
Cheers.

Not quite that far back. 1st pick in 2000, but he really stalled out.

Ahh yes, Miguel Negron. One of the infamous Interbrew draft picks where money was more important than talent.

I don't think that the Jays need to lose anyone off of their 40 man roster. They "outrighted" Towers to the minors, so I think he's off of the roster, is he not? This link seems to imply that (search for outright waivers).
http://www.all-baseball.com/archives...l_primers.html
The following link from ESPN covers the options, but not the outright...

I wasn't sure if they outrighted Towers (I thought they put him on reversable waivers, but no one picked him up so he is clear), and since he cleared they can do whatever they want I guess.
Jays have messed around a lot w/ their 40 man this season, I've lost track.

You are correct - Towers is no longer on the 40-man roster: http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/NASA...n.jsp?c_id=tor (although Figueroa hasn't been added yet).
I'm not sure if it's automatic that an outrighted player is removed from the 40-man roster, but since outrighting a player and removing a player from the 40-man involve the same thing (exposing them to waivers), I guess it leaves that option open.
In other baseball news, Michael Barrett has been suspended for 10 games for his sucker punch on A.J. Pierzynski (and he's appealing, because he's thinks it's too harsh) -- frankly, I think he deserves double that. You just can't punch someone like that, even after a hard (albeit clean) slide. For some reason Pierzynski was fined by the league for his "part", which is just stupid in my opinion...

Yeah, if you outright a player, he is dropped from the 40 man. Only players who arent arbitration eligible can be outrighted, as they can be added or dropped at will.
Once players gain arbitration rights, teams then option them to the minors, but cannot remove them from the 40 man without exposing them to waivers.

No kidding, I was hoping to sit down with a beer on a Friday and catch some baseball..........guess I'll have to settle for watching Steve Nash and the Suns.
BTW, it's 5-2 for the Jays in the bottom of the 6th.
Wells, Glaus and Rios all have home runs so far.

Between the NHL, NBA and Memorial Cup, it's no surprise at all that the game isnt on.
The flipside, of course, is that in the fall, there will be NHL and NBA fans ****ed that their meaningless regular season games wont be aired because the baseball playoffs are on.

Yeah, I'm sure that if Sportsnet wasn't showing the Mem Cup that they would be showing it for sure.
Not a huge deal........lots of sports to watch tonight.
Plus, it's Friday.........I'm in a good mood!
Now 6-2 for the Jays in the 7th.........Hillenbrand just hit an RBI double. Men on 2nd and 3rd, no outs.......could be a nice inning coming up here.

Janssen's struggling a bit this afternoon. Only given up one run, but three hits and two walks through two innings... And no way he's gonna be getting a complete game. Pitch count is already at 70 through 2.2 innings. Settling down now, though. 1-1 game right now.
Edit: ended up doing okay: 1R, 7H through 5.1 innings. Left the game with bases loaded, but Downs came in and got two outs to finish the inning. Still 1-1 in the seventh now.

This is just a fanastic game today. Great pitching. Great effort by the BJ bullpen and 3 gems by the Jays in the fields. 2 excellent plays by John Mac (who is now injured) and a great throw by Rios to get the runner at third in the 10th.
BJ Ryan blows his first save as a Jay but it wasn't a bad outing. Balls just found holes and some suspect D.
