As well, Road & Track have said that the handling of a Cooper S beats most BMWs, Ferrari's and Porsches. I would be hard pressed to put the Mustang in that class. And I've owned one...
|
I would really like to see a quote for that. I have a hard time believing that a Mini Cooper could out handle any current Ferrari or Porsche (minus the Cayene). Claiming that the Cooper can out handle a Testerossa is kind of a moot point as technology is far more advanced now.
You said you owned a Mustang for 7 years so I highly doubt it was one of the new ones. Once again, technology has changed...
I forgot to mention this earlier, but Lanny you cannot just bolt on a super charger and give the Z 400+ hp. There are other, much more expensive, upgrades that need to be installed with the supercharger. The Roadster Z (assuming you like convertables) STARTS at $53,500. Add 15-20 grand to that for the upgrades to get its HP up to Mustang level. The GT 500 should be priced around $50,000 with no need for upgrades --> I'm basing that price on the 2003-2004 SVT Cobra.

Like Lanny said, the only real difference between a Cooper S and Cooper S Works is in the engine (different head, different supercharger, exhaust etc) -- the suspension and handling are the same. You can add a Works suspension to a Cooper S or a Cooper S Works, it is just a changeout of springs, shocks & bushings in the shop. A Cooper S can also easily be turned into a full Works.
It is a fair comparison, because anyone can specify the Works package when they order their Cooper S.

Nissan is working on a new 450Z. It will have 430 HP - it should be fun.

One other thing for you Mustang lovers - the 350Z is a much nicer looking vehicle than a Mustang. There are tons of Mustangs around - not many 350Z's. I get compliments on my 350Z all the time. When you drive by in your 350Z, no one pays attention to the Mustang that is driving behind you. My associate drives a new Mustang GT, and he would trade me for my 350Z in a heartbeat.

Looks like the 350Z with a few modifications (side panel slightly different, modified back). It has a 4.5 litre V-8 engine, and is AWD. Looks and sound's like a real screamer.

"...the Cooper exudes such an immense sense of stability that you can go into a corner at a much higher speed, toss it around, and the car steadily tracks the road with confidence. Our slalom test revealed that the Mini can thread through the cones with moderate understeer and keep a blistering average speed of 67.6 mph, besting any current BMW, any Ferrari, and most Porsches." - Road & Track, February 2002
And this test was a Mini Cooper, not a Mini Cooper S.

The Skyline platform is the same as the 350z platform. G35's are badged as Nissan Skylines in Japan.

Did they just do that for the 2006? The 2005 is the old Skyline platform IIRC, which differs from the 350z. I don't know why they would start using G35's? The Skyline was AWD, which the G35 is not. Is this a temporary step toward the release of the rumored new Skyline?

I hope that is it. That looks way nicer than the pics I have seen. Although, it does look just a CGI rendering.
The G35's that are available in Canada/USA are basically the same thing that is badged as Skyline in Japan.

They did that for the entire life of the G35. The 2005 that you are thinking of was a special Nismo edition (that I believe was more of a supercar than anything, very very high performance). The 'normal' 2005 skyline was just the G35. Only some Skylines were AWD, with RWD turbo and nonturbo models available. Also 4 door skylines were available (the G35 4 door was sold as a skyline as well).
Old 4 door skyline:

Current skyline:

4door Nismo version:
Here is what the R35 skyline concept looks like:

Pretty slick. I'm glad they kept the shape of the 350Z headlights.

I much prefer the lights on the R34, it looks way meaner. By the way, the image of the new R35 didn't come through.

You must be right, because the vehicle I am thinking of was AWD, had close to 500hp and did the 1/4 mile in sub-11 seconds (stupid quick). The shape was the classic Skyline (late 90's with a 240sx-ish feel). Thank you for the correction. Interesting how they badge different vehicles in different countries.

Another interesting one for you then, your car is badged as a Fairlady in Japan (as were the 300zx's).
For the R35 pictures, go to this link. I actually posted several

The writer said its slalom time bested all of those cars and as Lanny/Ironhorse have already suggested, basing a cars handling on slalom times is not accurate.

That is a matter of opinion. I don't really care what your associate thinks, I love my Mustangs. I just don't like the 350 Z's round rear end. The Mustang has a more muscular shape that I prefer.
Mustangs IMO are much better looking than all of the cars with excessive body kits. Some exterior upgrades can look nice, but the current trend towards more and more exterior modifications makes some cars look way too busy (like the Red Skyline).

I just noticed the Nissan Infiniti GT-R got a page in the same issue as the Mustang GT500... I like it. Its smoother and it has a very cool color. The front end is iffy but I couldn't find a picture.
Edit: found it. I don't like the head lights going down the front (I know its not the lights themselves going down that far) and all of the black color.
