If Lindholm doesn't re-sign and the Flames start selling, I think Markstrom will change his mind very quickly. Retain salary on his contract and move him.
Might as well keep the younger goalie in Vladar and have him and Wolf split the starts

Even at 50% retention nobody is trading for that contract. The Flames are stuck with Markstrom, Huberdeau, and Kadri whether they like it or not.

They look at Chucky and Bennett and the grass looks greener. Calgary needs to rebuild the ship.

Trade markstrom at 50% to the Leafs, I think Treliving and a couple others would do it.

Honestly this is probably a good thing. Highest value he'll ever have. Might have a couple years left in the tank but great timing.
I'm not one for a rebuild but also don't mind not going for it this year.
Trade Tanev, Backlund, and Toffoli. Let the young guys figure it out and decide what needs to be done next year.

He probably knew most of this was going to happen anyway. Just like how Boomer insinuated yesterday a big reason he walked away is he knew there was an incredibly strong chance the Leafs job was going to be his. The Flames have been a team on a roller coaster for a decade. A good year followed by a terrible year, followed by a good year, bad year, great year etc. this offseason we had what seemed like a negative with Treliving walking away, then some positive with Sutter being fired, Conroy hired, Iginla hired and now we hear players want out so it is bad again. Connie makes some good deals and it will be great again.
While I don’t want to be spiteful towards Treliving I have no love lost for Leafs fans and hope he struggles to keep Matthews/Nylander etc

If anything, Tre should be feeling embarrassed. He directly managed the Flames into this mess.

This off season will define Conroy as a GM. I expect any trades will have a long term effect on the direction of the team.

Even if Markstrom does want out, I'd hold off and hope he rebounds to start this season, which I think he will, and then trade him. His value couldn't get lower anyway.

I'd say, given how Tre quickly found a new job and how well his peers speak of him, that other organization around the league see how ownership tied his hands and forced a direction on him.

How did they tie his hands? Not wanting to give him a 6th coach?
Got a new job because everyone blamed Sutter for last year. That blame can shift in a hurry

Ridiculous. There would be interest in Markstrom at $6M for 3 years. At $3M? Huge interest. Toronto and Edmonton, just to name 2, would likely be very interested. LA. Vegas...

So, people still want Backlund to re-sign and be captain? The guy doesn't even fully want to be here.

He - along with Toffoli and Tanev, would have huge value at the deadline. Or maybe next deadline - you don't have to trade everyone, all at once

The only thing they tied his hands on was the Sutter hire

Not for 3 years at his age, after the season he just had. There are plenty of options available with way less risk attached. Agree to disagree.

Ironically this takes me back to the OG Darryl Sutter Flames. Out with the Drury's, in with the Warrener's, who I believe wore a cowboy hat in his first interview with Calgary media.
Stock up on players that don't just tolerate wearing the Flaming C, but would jump at it.
That will begin with getting some top-end talent through the draft.
