I think someone's going to regret signing Dougie for $8M+ on a longterm contract. With Hamilton, I feel like you have to pair him with an elite shutdown guy like Slavin for him to have success. He puts up points, but I still find his defensive game a little lacking to justify that high a price tag. He didn't work out very well when he was paired with Gio.

Dougie won't sign in a hockey market so Oilers fans can stand down

Weird. I recall Giordano and Hamilton being a dominant pair.

They were fine. The issue was the second pairing that was created as a result.

That's how I remember it: the gap between Hamilton/Giordano and everyone else resulted in the king's ransom Treliving paid to acquire Travois Hamonic the following summer.

I'm not sure how much Giordano liked that pairing either.

Gio did have a much better individual season the year after Hamilton left, and I recall there being a couple comments from media members around the team around the time of the trade that Gio would be much happier paired back with Brodie again.

I'll be surprised if Dougie Hamilton gets 8 x $8M. Who even has that much available cap space or is willing to clear it? I did a quick look at a couple teams I thought he would go to but they're all to the cap and little coming off the books with UFAs and RFAs.

So maybe Seattle as others have mentioned, Boston, Buffalo? That's why it makes sense he could stay in Carolina because he's already on their payroll and they could give him a raise, I just don't think he'll be getting 8 million.

It just seems to me like that once you get to $6 million annual salary there's a lot of other things to consider, Dougie is a good player and everything but I don't know if he's the guy you build your team around.

I guess Carolina and Seattle are the only teams that can offer an eight year deal, everyone else only seven.

The fact that he has a history of not sticking around all that long in one place I'd be wary of signing him long-term.

It would be tough to move that much money a couple years down the road when the time invariably comes to move him along.
