But it's not exactly unforeseen. Edler, Tanev, Baertschi, Sutter, even Boeser etc. In the last four seasons, only one of those guys has played a full season. Bad luck, injury prone, poor conditioning coaches or medical staff, whatever it is, is anyone really going to be surprised if next season Edler misses yet another 20 games after they rely on him for 25 minutes a night when he's in the lineup? The last time he played a full season was 2012.

I actually think that the Canucks haven't done too terribly in their rebuild, even with screwing up a couple of high picks (Virtanen and Juolevi, one who is NHL calibre but underwhelming, and the other will end up probably being a decent depth defencemen, but very underwhelming).

They just need to sign some decent defencemen. I think Green has been a better coach then what I thought he would be. They have decent speed and have decent size in the line-up. They definitely didn't pull an Edmonton with their rebuild thus far, that's for sure, even with a few hiccups along the way. They aren't looking like an up-and-coming 'scary' contender, but they are looking like they will be a fairly good team in the next few seasons. I do think they have a good shot at making the playoffs by 2021.

Most teams, even good teams, it's usually somewhere between 35-55 points
No kidding. He hasnt played 82 games ever and.....he hasnt played 82 in the last two seasons combined.

Sven is probably one of the worst '2nd liners' in the league. Brings nothing outside of scoring and he's mediocre at that.

Core Pieces: Demko, Hughes, Boeser, Horvat, Pettersson
Support cast: Virtanen, MacEwen, Gaudette, Goldobin
Prospects: Podkolzin, Hoglander, Juolevi, Madden, Rathbone, DiPietro, Karlsson.

the biggest area of weakness is obviously defence which is a work in progress, but the Canucks signed a couple college free agents late last season (Teves, Rafferty and Eliot).

this trade for Miller is to surround the young guys with some veterans that fits the teams age range going forward.

guys like Beartschi (26) Miller (26) Pearson (26) Granlund (25) Spooner (26)

Imo, the Canucks are doing a good rebuild and like JB said, this trade accelerates the process and help develop the core pieces get better.

You cant continue to draft young kids and plug them in the lineup like EDM has done with Puljuarvi and expect to get better. Thats where the Canucks and Oilers differ imo we have a better support cast in place.

if only we could get out of the Eriksson and Sutter contracts

I'm sure I could say this about pretty much every team but the Canucks seemed to have had so many near misses with their first round picks over that 2012-2016 period that could have drastically changed their team's future if they just went with a player picked one or two spots after.

Skjei (28) instead of picking Gaunce (26) in 2012.

Theodore (26) instead of Shinkaruk (24) in 2013.

Nylanders (8)/Ehlers (9) instead of Virtanen (6) in 2014. Pastrnak (25) drafted one spot after McCann (24) in the same draft.

Tkachuk (6)/Keller (7) instead of Juolevi (5) and a much bigger stretch but Fox (66) instead of Lockwood (64).

I think Juolevi is the one that sticks out the most, I know some people were high on Ehlers (I was especially high on Nylander) but the rest are pretty much crapshoots. Still, just a couple changes and the team could be looking dangerous if everything else stayed the same.

Instead I think, outside of Thatcher being even better than hyped, sort of stuck in that "not good enough to make noise but not bad enough to get the high draft picks too get good" stage. Well, at least I hope

Unnecessary gamble in my mind, this draft pick turn out to be a 7th overall in 2020 or a 10th overall in 2021.

I think Mike Green has done an okay job, nothing spectacular.

The extreme disparity in talent from their top pieces to the rest of the team rivals only the pathetic Edmonton Oilers. You have Petterson, Horvat, Boeser, and now JT Miller, and then you have a gap in talent about as deep as marianas trench when you start listing the rest of the team. Also Edler for another three years is great news for Flames fans.

Luckily for Vancouver; Anaheim, Arizona, Edmonton, LA, are all extremely bad as well so their point totals will be inflated (again) due to being in a division with three actually good teams and four other featherweights.

It won't be 7th overall in 2020.

If it's in 2020, it will be at least 16th because it's only a 2020 pick if the Canucks make the playoffs next year.

Isn't that true for most teams not named Tampa though?

the only other team stacked with offensive talent is the Maple Leafs and maybe the Jets.

oh and Edler is signed for 2 years.

I wouldn’t be calling Demko and Hughes cores pieces as neither has proven anything yet.

Arizona was four points out of the playoffs. I think they are a bubble team again next year, and a good bet to finish ahead of the Canucks.

I’m sure EDM wishes they could back in time and get 4 years of a top 6 forward instead of Poolparty with that lottery pick.

Probably wouldn't want to go back 5 years though....

He’s pretty well considered a top 5 prospect in the entire NHL... I’m good calling him a core piece at this point. The bust rate in the NHL for guys like that is relatively small.

You are right but using that logic the Canucks are getting great utility from that pick and it’s not like Miller couldn’t be dealt for 1st or otherwise.

Canucks fans are also guaranteed playoffs or Benning gets fired after this season so win/win/win.

Agreed on Demko but top 10 picks like Hughes are usually considered core or future core players until they look like sure fire busts (You won’t find many Canucks say Joulevi is part of the core anymore)

I would never call a goalie prospect a sure thing.

Fair point. Though the point threshold for the playoffs in the West last season was about 6 points off its typical benchmark of ~96 points. The Coyotes would have been 10 points back of that and 12 points out of the playoff picture had they been in the East. I also wasn't implying any of those teams I mentioned were going to be worse than the Nucks, just that there are going to be a lot of fairly easy points to be had in a fairly uncompetitive Pacific Division so there might be some slightly elevated point totals that isn't really indicative of a team improving.
