In the playoffs when it’s do or die teams like ours get exposed as we don’t have enough physical pushback and get pummeled. Regular season is a long stretch and guys aren’t as willing to lay it all on the line as they are when it’s playoffs. Adding someone to raise our intensity level should be a no brainer.

yeah, i think we are to an extent...definitely agree on the outcome of the washington game and closer together than being apart at least on moving forward
as for getting grittier, i see it as 'like to have', but i think you skew more towards it as 'must have'...
at the end of the day, i trust BT to make the moves that he feels comfortable with...which includes acquisition cost and term...

That makes the original trade;
Hamilton
Late 1st
Fox
for
Hanifin
Lindholm
Gives us much needed toughness and skill in the bottom/middle six for playoffs. Not sure if Flames will need to add a prospect to this, just not Dube/Kilington/Andersson/Valimaki.

Trading a first for a soon to be UFA that is likely one of the most inconsistent players in the league to play on your third line and hope he signs for a team friendly deal is pie in the sky thinking. Ferland is not worth a first round pick.

In your opinion he isn't.
Late first rounder that's most likely never to be an impact player in the NHL. And is at least 3/4 years away from getting a taste.
Or...
A proven playoff impact player who can score and grind the other team down. Even if he doesn't sign, I still think he is worth the rental.

I don't mind trading the first. But no way in hell should it be for Ferland. Cant wait until he signs with another team and we can move on from this madness.

Who are guys that are rumored to be available, worth a first round pick?
Stone, Panarin and Duchene for sure
Simmonds, Hayes, Staal(dont think he's available but throwing it out there)
Who else?

Agreed.
Ferland would worry me. Wherever he ends up for the playoffs, I could easily see a scenario where we see 2015 Ferklund. Some team will sign him to 5x5-6/year and Ferland will promptly start his 5 year nap.
Whether his long stretches of indifferent play are because of concussion issues or just a lack of 'give a sh#t', I would be hesitant to commit.
In a sense it's a shame because when he's on he can hurt you in a lot of different ways.

When a team is where the flames are now, I would always move a first
How often does a team look this good? And in calgary's case have what looks to be a great path to round 2, and probably the best path to conference finals of anyone
Forward group is young but gio is 35, who knows how long he will be this good, and he is the most important asset not only for what he does, but what he does for brodie, and allowing easier matchups down the pairings
This may be the best chance the flames get, you never know
The Ottawa guys would definitely be a 1st ++ but some of the other players, be it rentals or guys with term, that can play top 6 or top 9 minutes, could be a big difference
Losing pick, let's say 27, which according to this from tsn on draft values
https://www.tsn.ca/statistically-spe...lues-1.1119528
Has a 60% chance to play 100 games, and a 16% chance to be top 6, or top 4d
Should do it everytime, if you think the team has a legitimate chance

Bennett and Neal come to mind as inconsistent. They both make more money and Ferland is better than both

The cost of a late 1st rounder is hard to measure.
If Ferland or whoever is instrumental in winning the Flames a playoff series is it worth a 1st rounder?
Having some more firepower/depth may be the difference in getting to the 2nd, 3rd or 4th round of the playoffs.

I can't see Tre trading Calgary's 1st outright. Maybe the 2019 2nd that can upgrade to a 1st if the player re-signs or the flames make the 3rd round.
Should be an interesting 3 weeks, but I hope we take a mid range view on this. Anything that can either be there for the window or extend the window is worth it.

Well, the Leafs got a first pairing Dman with term for a late 1st, a B prospect, and an unsigned C prospect.
If that's a sign of anything, it's definitely a buyers market and Calgary's 1st should be able to get something good

Why would the rangers do that including taking all that cap for next season?

A pretty tight group from all appearances. Can't see any major additions.

I like the idea of Zuccarelo particularly if the availability of others makes him a second tier choice at a lower cost
