It's impossible to evaluate this trade until both Hanifin and Lindholm resign. Not sure how anyone can over react until that happens. IMO this trade is a very good trade long term. Maybe not great short term

Ferland has 1 year til UFA. If he gets a 4+ million contract long term and Lindholm gets 4.75 for 6 years. I would rather take the 23 year old for 6-8 years over Ferland who only has proven to be worth 4+ million on the first line playing with a player like Gaudreau. At the deadline as a rental maybe worth a 2nd

Fox is a good prospect but he still ranks outside the top 50 prospects in the NHL. He could be a huge steal but he may never have been a Flame

Hamilton vs Hanifin. I like Hamilton more but he has 3 years to UFA. I would think Treliving will sign Hanifin to at least 6 years or a bridge deal then a 6-8 year deal. Hanifin has high end potential and is 21. If Treliving signs him 5.5 to 6 mil for 6-8 years this buys the Flames time to become cup contenders. I could see Hamilton getting 10 mil in 3 years or more depending on the cap. If the Flames were on the cusp of a cup fine don't do this. Right now they aren't close so sign me up for 2 very good young core players for 1 very good young core player

We have to give Lindholm and Hanifin a chance before we conclude Brad made a bad deal and needs to be gone.

And I was thinking how Brad usually makes some splash trade on Draft weekend and it was looking like not so this year. Then bang! He does it again. If for nothing else, it certainly brings CP to life during the dog days of (early) summer.

With the wild overrating of Hamilton around here and the bananas expectations around the return he'd get in a trade, this thread was inevitable. Over the next few years, when we see that Hamilton is not nominated for any Norris trophies, and he doesn't suit up for Canada at the Olympics or World Cup, the rage will die down.

It's clear that the Flames have been shopping Hamilton for a while. The tricky part was always going to be moving him without leaving a big hole in the blue line. That Treliving managed this deal without seriously downgrading the defence in the short run (and possibly improving it in the long run), while also adding a top-six RH forward who has a great two-way game, and both of them under 24 years old, and with the likelihood of locking both up long-term going forward... that's some pretty impressive wizardry.

Possible a year ago when Tre traded for Hamonic he thought he would eventually deal Hamilton?

the people that got hit the hardest with this trade were the ones expecting a top 3 pick AND an elite top 6 winger for Hamilton.

And if he was really worth that, it begs the question why BT would feel the need to trade him in the first place?

Look at the bright side, this time we traded our 25 year old top pairing offensive Dman for two NHL players that were actually younger than him, both recent 5th overall picks, and players with room to get better and should main stays on the top half our roster for the next 10 seasons possibly.

I'm less upset with this trade than I was when it was announced, but lets face it, Treliving's last year has given plenty of reason for people to hold this sentiment:

- Knew we needed a scoring RW last year, knew we had a number of good defensive pieces. Traded our 2018 draft for another defenceman anyway.

- Failed to remove Gulutzan in a timely manner when the season could have been saved. Replaced him with another guy largely like Gulutzan without even looking around at options. That Sutter would have come back didn't help.

- Honestly, aside from acquiring Smith, none of his moves over the last year or so has really helped much. To wit: We're hoping a guy we picked up for a 7th rounder can be a "diamond in the rough".

- One year later, still needs a RW, still needs more offence. Makes a trade that doesn't really address any of that by replacing our only RW who did anything (albeit, for only half a season) with yet another C.

The moves, all taken together, causes one to struggle to understand what, if any, plan Treliving is actually operating under.

On the bright side though, Treliving can say that he hasn't dealt a Hart winner and Calder winner to get only a middle pair D back. So it always could be worse.

I think it was a bad trade but I trust Brad and he knows more than any of us do. He's a good gm not afraid to do what he thinks is right for the team. Don't fire him

Clearly, I'm being obtuse here, but I don't think I'm the only one.
Here's how I break it down in terms of apples to apples:

Hamilton = 1st + 1st + 2nd
Ferland = 2nd + late round pick
Fox = 2nd + late round pick

Reasons: Hamilton only improved his value and so his younger value (1st + two 2nds) is upgraded so that one of those 2nds are now a first. He is now a legit franchise D-man, the kind who are rarely traded. Ferland is now a twenty goal scorer just hitting his prime and is a highly physical player who can go up and down the line-up. Fox was drafted as a 3rd and since then his stock has risen exponentially, given his NCAA performance is historically exceptional for a young D-man.

Hanifin = 1st + 2nd + 2nd
Lindholm = 1st + 3rd

Reasons: Hanifin is worth at least what Dougie was worth when he was traded from Boston. A possible franchise D-man value. Lindholm, however, has been in the league five years now and recently regressed from his career-high 45pts in 72 gp. Not quite Tomas Tatar value but more than Ryan Hartman value.

Tally:
Flames acquire: (X2) 1st rounders, (X2) 2nd rounders, 3rd + late round pick
Canes acquire: (X2) 1st rounders, (X3) 2nd rounders, + (X2) late round pick

Not surprising. Treliving is banking on two things:

1) Sold high on Ferland, Fox, and Hamilton, assuming they reached their ceiling.
2) Bought low on Lindholm and Hanifin assuming they haven't reached their ceiling.

You're right if the Flames get really lucky and they both break out they could potentially win it some day. But right now the value is ridiculously one sided. BT should've at least gotten some good picks or something to even it out.

Yeah but they weren't there or I expect he would have got them.
So you do the deal, or you don't.
He did.

Time will tell
