If Treviling's solution to missing out on Stone is to re-sign Engelland instead then we're setting ourselves up to possibly be incredibly weak on defense.

Remember how much we struggled defensively before Stone was brought in, specifically how much Brodie struggled? We would be very ill prepared if our defense was

Gio - Hamilton
Brodie - Engelland

with the possibility of a prospect or two making the jump. Not good enough for where we are in our rebuild, imo.

Every single Oiler fan I have spoken to about Russell want him back. His stock went up through the playoff run.

I expect him to sign a 3 year, $10 Million contract with a full NMC to stay in Edmonton

Not according to HF as plenty of them want him on their bottom pairing and dislike how he gets hemmed in his own end and his means of a breakout pass is clearing it up the boards. Russell is hard to quantify. He's got a lot of heart and leadership intangibles but he's a poor possession player so you have to take the bad with the good. I would rather have Stone back over Russell but if Stone isn't available Russell is familiar with the roster and can play 4th defenseman or bottom paring just fine as I still don't think he's going to command an overly large contract.

I said somewhere else, I would love to get Tanev to be Brodie's partner but he wouldn't come cheap especially from a rival. Tre thieving him would be awesome though, as many nuck fans seem to think they can get Drouin, Reinhart or a top 10 pick in the draft for him.

He's good but not great and would likely fetch a Regehr type return and not anything close to those players. I don't see any scenario where they would trade him to the Flames unless there's a massive overpayment but you never know with that management team as maybe Weisbrod loves Jankowski. That would probably be a fair deal as the Flames have a glut of centers at the moment and Tanev would be an immediate improvement on the roster.

Maybe Wiesbrod loves Wotherspoon and Bouma haha

This could be said for any bad d-man. Bartkowski is terrible.

I would love Tanev to join Brodie but that would be a massive overpayment for the Flames to acquire. There would no doubt be a rival premium and unless the Canucks want to be in a rebuild for the next decade, they shouldn't be parting ways with important talent

I would be okay bringing back last year's D minus Wideman. If we get a full year out of Brodie, we'll be aces. If we're going budget, Del Zotto and Franson aren't bad options, although the reason they are cheaper is because they are inconsistent. I'd be happy enough with Stone or Alzner at the Frolik/Brouwer 4x4.5.

I have been thinking about Russell coming back and am worried that it could happen. I feel the only reason he didn't come back last year was the cap. Calgary couldn't figure it out and he signed in Edmonton. I feel it could be 50-50 between Calgary and Edmonton for Russell's services but I would hate to be in a bidding war for him.

Bringing Stone back is okay but not the real answer to our number 4 D spot. The Flames lack tradable assets and getting a top goalie is more important.

Seems like we have have a really strong 1st and 2nd pair lefty D, and a really good battle for bottom pair lefty D. No need to sign a LHD IMO.

Right side:

Hamilton - LOCK

If Stone is re-signed, he's another locked in guy, so you're left with just finding a bottom pair RHD, Andersson will push for a spot, but i would be OK with bringing in some competition to push him.

Deryk Engelland
Dylan McIlrath
Korbinian Holzer
Roman Polak
Yanik Weber
Paul Postma
Matt Tennyson
Nate Prosser
Eric Gryba
Luke Witkowski
Cody Goloubef
Taylor Fedun
Tom Gilbert
Jakub Nakladal
Chad Ruhwedel

Lots to choose from of all shapes, sizes, ages, experience levels, and skill sets.

I'm also all for trading for an upgrade on Stone for the 2nd pairing RHD, but the type of assets Tre might use to do that will probably be needed to acquire a young goalie now.
Getting back to this, and the question of bottom pairing right shot D man to finish off the D assuming Stone is re-signed and management wants someone to fill that spot while Andersson logs big minutes in Stockton.

Some of these Dmen are going to be left unprotected and could very likely be selected by Vegas in the ED. They will have lots of 4-7 Dmen so it wouldn't shock me if Tre trades for one because they won't be keeping all of them.

RHD (25) FLA - Alex Petrovic - 6'4 210 lbs (18 min avg)
RHD (25) FLA - Mark Pysyk - 6'1 200 lbs (18 min avg)
RHD (25) CHI - Trevor Van Riemsdyk - 6'2 190 lbs (18 min avg)
RHD (25) TOR - Alexey Marchenko - 6'3 210 lbs (17 min avg)
RHD (29) BOS - Kevan Miller - 6'2 210 lbs (18 min avg)
RHD (30) BOS - Adam McQuaid - 6'4 215lbs (18 min avg)
RHD (27) ARI - Luke Schenn - 6'4 230 lbs (18 min avg)

I could easily see one of these guys getting selected and flipped by Vegas and being on Tre's radar. Probably more too, I just quickly looked around.

Why isn't Stone good enough for the #4 spot? I would love him to be the full-time partner for Brodie next season. If Stone comes back the Flames could go back to having 2 defensemen on each powerplay unit. 1st PP Giordano/Hamilton, 2nd PP Brodie/Stone. Stone has a great shot that wasn't unleashed very often last season because he didn't get any power play time.
