I think using the word 'teen' provides even more context and amplifies the tragedy. It's the correct word. I know 19 year olds. I'd be more apt to call them kids than men.

It's pretty standard throughout the media to call 13-19 yr olds teens and 20+ men. Not sure how that is something to get all offended about.

As to stiffer sentences for gun crimes, if you look in the US I think you'll find the extra penalty for gun crimes is one of the first things to go in plea bargains. It rarely gets added on. At least that's what I've always heard when the subject pops up.

I don't know about that. I was also at Electric Avenue the night the Flames won the cup and frequented the area seeing I and two other guys lived in an 11th ave apartment only blocks away. Saw and was involved with plenty of fights but never saw a gun or knife. Garbage can lids and the odd bat but typically always fist fights or the odd laugher like that video. I never once recall being in a situation where I feared for my life. It's not the same today. Not even close.

I was at Coconut Joe's in 1997(?) and a knife came out. Situation was contained before anything happened. That's the only time I witnessed anything, but I remember hearing about it in the news fairly often. Not as often as Edmonton, which we nicknamed Stabby McStabtown but it did happen here.

It amplifies the tragedy because it extends sympathy to the perpetrator

And you said something about how he would never be able to get a job and that's punishment enough...so are you only against gun crimes?
Wait what? I don't think I said the 6 month sentence on Turner was enough, that doesn't sound like something I'd say?

Can you pull that up.

I've always though been a hawk on violent crime and on crimes against Children. What I've said in the past though is there should be a two tier prison system, the first time your convicted its all about rehabilitation and education. If you come before the courts a second time we ship you to a penal farm in the arctic or toss you down a well.

From a criminality point of view, I have a strong hatred for pedo's, rapists violent criminals and murderers, and drug dealers. I think they're all pretty unredeemable unless they can prove otherwise, and I think that's what we're really missing in our system is a convict earning his way out instead of being released because you know they did their time.

again going off of memory with Turner, I think I said something to the effect that we should be marking people like him when he gets out so that everyone knows who he is. But I don't think I said I was ok with a short sentence.

But I could be wrong, but that would be weird.

Maybe, although I think it adds to the senselessness of the whole situation. Teenagers can make horrible decisions, so it's even more tragic that Hicks is now gone because a young person made a dumb decision.

Former Flames head coach Bob Hartley touches on the subject as he went through a player passing away in 2003.

Quote:
“It’s the nightmare of my career,” said Hartley, who was coach of the Atlanta Thrashers when he received a late-night call informing him of a serious car accident involving two of his players that rocked the hockey world.

“It doesn’t bring back good memories, that’s for sure. I’ll remember it for the rest of my life.”
Quote:
With the 2003 NHL season a few weeks away, Calgary native Dany Heatley crashed his Ferrari into a fence after losing control at 130 km/h, badly injuring the star forward. His young teammate, Dan Snyder, was ejected from the vehicle and fractured his skull. Despite brain surgery the 25-year-old never emerged from his coma, dying six days later.

Snyder’s funeral was the day after the season started, leaving Hartley and his devastated team to pick up the pieces.

“I would talk to the players every day but then I’d have to run to my office so I could cry secretly,” said Hartley of the emotional task of trying to be a leader while dealing with such tragedy.

“But sometimes they would walk in and they see me crying and they’d pick me up. Some guys handled it way tougher than others but at the same time everybody cared. The good thing about team sports is you’re surrounded by great people and you rely on each other and that’s how we got through it.”

Fired by the Flames last spring and understandably disinterested in doing media interviews all summer, Hartley agreed to speak Monday perhaps with hopes his experience can help the grieving process. In particular, his journey may help that of his friend Dave Dickenson, the first-year head coach of the Stampeders.

The issue is that the crowd got a lot worse than the old Back Alley crowd.

The old Back Alley crowd was a bunch of hard rock dudes that looked like today's hipster but could actually fix their own car. Work 9-5 blue collar jobs and let loose on the weekends. Get too drunk and fist fight at worst. That was the vibe I got when I used to go there but again didn't go that often.

Marquee opened up with good intentions and enjoyed going there at first. Live music venue with craft beer. Very low key. Went a few years later and the scene changed into a ghetto gangster crowd. Didn't stay too long that time and wouldn't go back. Senseless violence was bound to happen because of that crowd.

The whole 'club' scene is Calgary turned into that. It was a good time when I started going back in the early 2000s. It was a decent crowd for the most part. Most people went for the music, especially for the DJ events. You'd see the same people over and over and got to know them. Stay away from the gangsters who went and they left you alone. You'd even get a head nod from some of them if you saw them enough.

The past couple years it's turned into this young poser crowd that couldn't give 2 craps about the music and just go because 'VIP' is cool, being at clubs are cool, and picking fights with others is cool. Look at some guy wrong (whatever that means) and immediately you have 5 of his buddies surrounding you.

Now every guy at a club who is shorter then 5'6'' has short man syndrome and my god what a disease it is. Symptoms include short fused tempers, an inability to talk out differences, probable steroid use and the need to walk in groups of 5+ and pick fights with anyone in their way.

It's sad that Mylan actually tried to defuse the situation and buy the guy a drink to calm things down. That's what a real man does. He tries to talk things out. Then this thug and his crew escalate things and next thing you know this guy is shot. So stupid and ridiculous and it's very much the reality of today's 'club' scene in this town. I enjoy going to different club venues in other cities and enjoy the experience, music and meeting new people. But there's something in the water in Calgary that just brings out the worst is people in the venues here. I've been to many clubs all over the world and the Calgary scene/crowd is by far the worst, and it's not even close.

Its just costing us too much money.

Sometimes my friend its not about the money.

Besides, if we put them to work we could off set some of the costs. Get them to crush gravel 8 hours a day for asphalt manufacturers. Or put them to work on northern road crews, or cleaning camp toilets 10 hours a day.

The person that did this killing is a worthless human being with what sounds like a long rap sheet, so no I don't care about the money, lock him in a deep dark hole and throw away the key and costs be damned.

There was no good reason for this murder, except that the kid was a thug with a gun looking for trouble.

Its tragic that a kid that worked so hard to get out of Detroit to move to a better life was snuffed out by a worthless piece of garbage.

I'm firm in my belief that if you pull out a gun and kill someone for no good reason, that's it for you. If you're a drug dealer defending your turf, or a gangster defending your honor or establishing how tough you are, or your angry because people are mean to you and you go out and shoot someone or you catch your wife in bed with someone else and shoot them, you don't deserve anything but a cold wet cell with 4 walls closing in on you, some back breaking labor to fill your days and hopefully a long life to contemplate that you are a dirt bag.

The only concession is that I believe in choices, leave a nice noose in your cell for you in case you want to escape your punishment.
Amen

Yes.

Very little info about Mylan online, but it looks like he was recruited by Green straight out of Renaissance High School in the D. I used to work at 6 mile and Outer (maybe a mile from this school). This area is not one you want to visit. 10 years later, I still get anxiety when thinking back to my time there. I have no doubt that there is a story about the journey to get to the CFL. So senseless.

Lol. Children's cough syrup was definitely the secret ingredient.

And if I recall correctly Moe stole the recipe off Homer.

CBC Radio interviewed his mother this morning. She was holding herself together remarkably well given the circumstances and the interview ended up being very good in my opinion. We found out what kind of person Mylan Hicks was, not just what kind of football player he was. Very nice to listen to.

Didn't they report they had a bunch of witnesses pointing out the shooter?
