Couldn't we just buy out semin's contract and essentially buy ourselves that top pick?

Yep that's exactly it.
You can tell right away which people watch other teams and which ones just run on name value.
Was listening to sports talk radio out of Vancouver tonight and a caller called in saying the canucks needed a top-4 defenseman. He suggested Tyler Myers because he could be re-united with Desjardins from the Tigers days (he actually played for Kelowna not Medicine Hat). Said the canucks could give up either Stanton or Markstrom plus Hansen and a draft pick to get it done.
Some "hockey fans" just don't watch other teams. Tyler Myers is far overrated. Oliver Ekman-Larsson is far underrated.
Just the way it goes.

There are 28 million real dollars left in his deal. Hard to go to ownership and ask them to buy a draft pick for almost 30 mill.

I meant small chance of getting first overall. Even if they finish last it's only 20%. There's still a reasonable chance Calgary finishes outside the playoffs and has a shot at McDavid.
Seems like a really expensive lottery ticket that wouldn't just lose, but also destroy your family

I doubt the Hurricanes are at all willing to deal their first rounder anyway, especially in Francis' first year on the job. What sort of a message would that send to the fanbase that they're potentially trading away the right to pick McDavid or Eichel all to get rid of Semin. I think another team (maybe even Washington) would take him if Carolina is willing to eat a hefty portion of Semin's contract. Any discussion of them moving their 2015 first rounder is asinine imo.

The point of the Semin + 1st proposal was a pipe dream like many other proposals. If Carolina can dump that hideous contract and player to someone else, they have to sweeten the pot. Not a lot of other teams can fit Semin under their cap and Flames have the cap room and spending dollars for him now and can use a talented, albeit lazy RW. Carolina isn't exactly a hockey hotbed and a McDavid would be lost on their fanbase.

Fair enough, but you'd also be going with the potential to get a generational talent franchise player. You could also eat salary and deal away a pick in the future to package Semin to another team a year or two into his Flames tenure. This whole thing is a pipe dream but it's an interesting thought.

You mean aside from the fact that there is no chance in hell that Carolina would trade that pick for such a crap offer in the first place?
If you want that pick - and assuming there is any chance Carolina would trade it at all - you're giving up at least two if not all three of Monahan, Bennett, Brodie, plus our own first round pick, and probably more.
And perhaps still getting saddled with Semin's poutfest.
And that is BEFORE the lottery. If they won the lottery, the price would only go up.
I'm not even exaggerating.

Unless we can get Steven Stamkos for nothing, I don't see the Flames trading for some big name players. Kind of funny not a speculation from a media about the Flames trading at the start of the season, then suddenly they were doing well in the season and we have two guys (Dreger and McKenzie) saying Flames are looking at trading. Hmmm....

I think they just report what Burke and Treliving tell them.
The timing does make some sense, we're getting healthy and starting to send down players who can play now, not to mention on a 2 game losing streak since the vets started getting healthy.
Plus you have Edmonton and Ottawa hogging the national spotlight with their disaster decision making. Our management looks a lot more competent and grounded in comparison.

That would completely solidify our top 4. Gio-Brodie Russell-OEL. And Wideman could be bumped down, while provide offensive punch on the bottom pairing. Talk about a defense corps!

If you believe in "Buy low and sell high" this may be the time to trade a player or two. Take a player like Jooris for example, he's playing really well but doesn't really have a track record. Maybe now is when you move him.

I think we should leave the group as it is and see what our young players are made of. Either they continue to play well and make playoffs, or they fall apart and learn from their mistakes.

That's kinda the opposite of what he said. I don't want to move Jooris because he fills a eral need on this team as a good faceoff guy, who can chip in with points and provide energy. But in general, we also don't want to be so enamoured of our kids that we overvalue them and refuse to address needs at other positions. Look north to see what happens.

Exactly the reason why the 'Canes aren't going to trade their 2015 1st.

No team that's expecting to miss the playoffs is going to trade their 1st rounder this year.
