He would be fine as the #7 position on the blue line. Unlike the forward position the Flames lack quality defenseman prospects.

I am surprisingly ok with all this. The way both Wideman and Gio were out for long periods last year it's fine to have a bit of depth that has actually played in the NHL for a bit. I only want call ups for guys that are forcing their way onto the big league roster, and Brookbank, or someone like him, would be expendable if that were to happen. Established low level NHLer battling a young promising prospect. When that prospect takes away the job of a fringe player that would be a 7th d-man on this team, they're at least ready to have regular minutes in the NHL. That's when you bring them up for good.

Just curious why we don't sign him outright. We have cap and contract room and we don't have that much depth. Reasons I can think is that we offered a two way and he wants to show he is worthy of a one way or a better depth dman could come up on the waiver wire

Why would you sign him outright if you don't have to? You want to create competition at camp.

In case someone else signs him from underneath you? That's the risk of bringing him on a pto. Suppose another team gets an injury and suddenly needs a dman. Now you're out of some depth.

Seems like a quality team first guy. Can't have enough of those type of guys around.

While signing him would be a low risk move, having him on tryout is a no risk move. If other teams were seriously interested I don't think he'd be coming here on a pto.

Besides the possibility of finding someone better on the waiver wires, I think Treliving is still trying to make a deal for a top 6 defenceman. This would make Brookbank expendable.

Wouldn't mind adding Brookbank to Magnificent McDavid Seven.

Giordano - Brodie - Smid - Wideman - Russell - Engelland - Brookbank

That's a solid-enough, tough-to-play-against D lineup for a team which isn't expecting to compete for a playoff spot this year.

Crazy as it's sounds it could be Brookbank that puts him there, they overpaid for Engelland for his charactor not his playing ability. Brookbank can actually play, if he would have cut out the dumbass penalties he would have been a regular.
