Didn't listen to radio feed frequently, but whenever I did, there was a rustic vibe to it with Peter calling the game. Gonna be strange listening to the games and having a different voice come out the speakers.
Congrats to Maher on having a legendary career. He defiantly should be permanently honoured by the Flames in some fashion.

At least he's retiring before he loses his touch *cough Bob Cole *cough. Thanks for all of the years of service Peter.

He was asked about it later and he hadn't done it since the cup run up until that point IIRC.
Obviously there was a good run of them during the cup run and several years after but Maher didn't throw out a Yeah Baby willy nilly.

I believe the first (and definitely the best, most heartfelt, unscripted) yeah baby was when the Flames beat the Oilers in '86. Surprised and concrned by the suddenness of this news. My sense was always that Peter would call games till the day he died if he had any say. You're the best PM.

Well, this sucks. He was an outstanding broadcaster.
"You can put it in the win column!"
We'll miss you Peter Maher.

Ugh, you can put it in the sucks column.
I know he's getting up there, and life goes on, but man, this blows. Listening to games without him is going to really tough to get used to...I think a lot of us grew up with this guy. I still remember listening to hockey games as a young kid, late at night way past my bedtime, with a portable radio in bed, and Peter calling the games. Hell, I still do that.
This blows goats.

Sad news for sure. As a kid born in 1979 I'll always remember listening to Peter Mahr on the post game show as fell asleep in my Dads truck on the way home for the game. Legend!

Cole still can get me more emotionally invested in a game than most broadcasters.

Exactly. He screws up a lot now (who wouldn't at his age) but he's still one of the best at PBP.

Not me. He sounded pretty out to lunch in the Pittsburgh/Columbus series IMO.
The biggest issue he has is recognizing an exciting moment or even sounding excited by goals now.

Me too and this year it's like he's gone by in time, sounding better than he has in years. The Columbus tying and overtime goal in game 4 was epic.

Bob Cole's "surely that's gotta be enough" call in the 2002 Olympics still makes the hair on the back of my neck rise.

My mom was not a sports fan and getting to watch hockey on TV was rare when I was a kid at home so the majority of the time, I listened to Maher. The man is a Legend in my mind just like Ed Whalen. When I was 14, we won the Cup and listening to Maher go off was awesome- my mom let me watch the celebration on TV for that one

I do agree but he does tend to get lost quite a bit. I have a feeling with Rogers taking over HNIC his time might be coming to an end.

I wonder if Loubardias will be taking over. I could see that...maybe that was one of the carrots of him joining the pbp team in the first place.
