Based upon what Boston received in exchange in the deal that included Seguin as part of a seven player swap, and considering how highly regarded the top end of the draft was this past year, I'm not even sure how high Gaudreau's trade value can be construed to be from this.

I agree with your conclusion that he'll eventually be a Flame, but I don't think he's given any indication that he'll skip his final year of college. The closest that I've heard to that was a comment in the spring that he hopes to play for the Flames "at the end of next season," but "next season" could have meant '13-'14 or '14-'15. The Flames fan in me hopes he meant it the way you took it, but I doubt that he even knows for sure at this point. If he can win the Hobey Baker and the national championship this season in his hometown, I think he'll go pro, but he doesn't seem like the type to leave unfinished business.

Since the same can be said for virtually EVERY prospect ( sans Tim Erixon), I don't see how this counts at all as a counter argument. Are you suggesting that we should remove the benefit of doubt concerning Gaudreau's public verbal commitments because Justin Schultz reneged on his? That's pretty flimsy. I'll say it again: it is akin to worrying about being struck by lightning every time there is a thunderstorm.
The evidence is still stacked enormously in the Flames favour that Gaudreau will be on the roster in the Fall.

He pretty clearly was speaking about this year.
From 18 July, 2013:

He will sign with the Calgary Flames in early April.
Less than a percent of college prospects actually go through the loophole to sign with other teams. It's not some thing that happens every odd day. He's going to be hungry for pro hockey after dancing around NCAA teams all season. I'm sure of it. He can always go back to school later.

Justin Schultz told the managment group of Anaheim he would sign-- not the whole country via the press, Gaudreau has publicly stated numerous times he wants to sign and play here.
Big difference IMO.
Having said that I might get a little nervous if he returns to BC for his 4th year.

Was that confirmed? We all love Monorail but at that time I can't imagine that Feaster would turn that offer down. Especially with 2 other first rounders to come.

You basically lose another blue chip prospect in Gaudreau though. I'm not sure I would be happy with that trade. But I'm a big Gaudreau fan, I think he'll be the next great Flame.

I remember hearing the Flames turned it down because they wanted to do the rebuild the right way. They were probably extremely high on both Monahan and Johnny. Looking at Monahans maturity he seems like the better choice to build a team around than Seguin who was being shopped due to concerns about his character

As if there was any doubt, Johnny's 1 on 3 goal from Sunday was the top play of the week last week in College hockey: http://www.ncaa.com/video/icehockey-...boston-college

They did not know for certain it was going to be Monahan.... Carolina could have taken Monahan and the Heat would have had Elias Lindholm playing for them.
Lindholm and Gaudreau for Seguin would be that much more tempting.
If Monahan would have been gone at #6 would have the flames made that trade?

Easy mistake to make since they were so similar.

There is that possibility. It was clear the Flames targeted Monahan from the draft combine on. They got 3 of the 4 players they brought in.
Even after the draft they were rumored to be a front runner for Seguin. If that is the case it is clear Boston covets Gaudreau which is not surprising

He basically has top plays #1 and #2 in that list, since they included both his 1-on-3 goals from the army game, but he should really have all three—or at minimum three of the four top plays of the week.

If Boston keeps trying to take your player that's a good sign you should keep him..

I think if there was any way to get Seguin and keep Monohan that it would have easily been worth Guadreau +
At the time I thought Sven + Gaudreau was too much for seguin, but I was super wrong.
Seguin's contract would help the Flames reach the cap floor while moving old guys.
