If you just let your kids do exactly what they want, they won't have much exposure to the range of things they could be doing. Of course you give them options, but letting them focus on only one activity for 12 months of every year shouldn't be one of them. Why did you bring up video games to begin with?

The point is that forcing children to do x or y is a recipe for disaster. I played with kids who did not want to be there and they were miserable.

There is no Hockey Alberta sanctioned spring hockey. None.

Of course there are bad coaches, but the associations/governing bodies weed them out. My club has not asked youth coaches to return that coached last year. Why because they are crap.

To be clear a coach does not get banned from coaching because he is "crap".

Spring hockey doesn't have a governing body. As was postered earlier, if you want you can go start your own team and do what you want.

To me that is a problem, a huge problem.

Unitl, Spring Hockey in all it's shapes and forms is sanctioned by Hockey Alberta I will not change my opinion until that happens.

Don't force them to do anything. Don't let them do exactly what they want if it's not in their best interest.

Don't let them play hockey for every waking moment of their young lives in the same way that you wouldn't let them play video games every waking moment of their young lives just because that's what they wanted.

Parents that see the need to live their life though their kids sports lives is just pathetic. Especially little kids.
Just wait until High School the crazed parents get even worse.
As parents you have to know when to shut it down and just walk away from idiots.

Man I wish we had Spring hockey when I was a kid. The only reason you played baseball and Golf, was to tie you over until the next Hockey season started. The most depressing day of the year, was always the lame team season wrap up BBQ you had at your creepy coach's townhouse in some singles community.

So your defending his inability to punch well? Is he a model parent?

And knowing how to throw a punch well, doesn't make you some sort of goon. Just means you understand you don't hit a guy limp wristed with the side of your hand swinging from above your head like a spaz, like white hat guy. I would be laughing if a guy was hitting me like that. It would be one of those scenarios where you are doubled over laughing and can't fight back, like when an older sibling is tickling you until you can't breathe or move.

You should really learn how to punch just so you can defend your self if needed. Doesn't mean you have to be a goon or a bully, but knowing how to fight is pretty important in my opinion.

There is a parent in my son's association who was an assistant coach for many of his early years. He consistently berated kids while he ran the gate, told kids they weren't nearly as good as his son, weasled himself onto the board, and into evaluator positions to assure his boys made it to the top tiered teams every year - the whole family was cut throat this way, everybody knew it. I am sure there are families like this in every association.

He once drove a PeeWee kid, half his height, and a quarter of his weight, into the boards because the kid embarassed him, beating him wide in a drill. The kid was laying in a heap on the ice, and this Dad simply skated away, looking over his shoulder as if to say, "that'll learn the punk to beat ME wide". The association banned him from coaching minor hockey shortly after that. However, in spring hockey, he would use his employer's sponorship money to buy swag for the spring team, and voila! he was on the bench again, showcasing his future nhler, and belittling anybody that took attention away from his kid.

This is anecdotal, I know, but I agree 100% that spring hockey needs to be regulated in some way. Another problem is that some meat-head kids aren't worried about suspensions for hitting from behind because nothing is enforced.

thats a really good point and very true imo. My Dad taught me how to defend my self when is was 7 and that continued until i was 16. It was a nightly routine.
A little different then most Father son or older brother younger brother scenarios.
Of course he also was an accomplished student of Judo and Boxing.
Point is i taught both of my sons to how to properly defend themselves from various possible situations.
Neither one of them ever gooned up at bars that i am aware of.
If a person is taught how to defend them-self it becomes a skill.
You don't teach kids how to fight saying hey Johnny this how you whoop someones ass. Here i will show you how.
There is honor in fighting and teaching self defense if done the right way.

I hated playing on the reserve as a kid as well. I remember being in the penalty box when I was 10 or 11 and this little kid used my helmet as a speed bag the whole time I was in there. I was too scared to do anything so I just let it happen.

I cannot stop laughing at this story. I have spent the last hour randomly laughing about this every time I see the visual of some crazy kid amped upped on slurpees and Nerds, speed bagging your Cooper, while your hunched over on the bench, blankly staring at the ice.
