That's bosh and hokum, and it does a disservice to the people. The first step always in solving any problem is to define the problem correctly. There are no terrorists anywhere in the world whose goal is the destruction of civilization, Western or otherwise.

Sorry Looger, I read that column and I don't buy this guys reasoning or logic.
When the terrorists attacked the twin towers, and the pentagon, that goes beyond a protest, that goes to attacking the key tenants of a civilization, they attacked the financial and military base of a nation state.
when the Hezbollah declares its intentions to destroy Isreal and kill jews enmasse, is it not an attack on a civilization.
Its too short sighted to blame the terrorist actions on activities in Afganistan and Iraq, since the same type of Muslim Extremists attacked the World Trade Center twice, attacked a U.S. Navy ship, destroyed the Marine Barricks and other acts. Call it what you want, but if the U.S. is one of they key pieces of Western Civilization, as is Britain and Spain, then they've declared war on Western Civilization.
When this writer talks about pinpricks, he downplays these Terrorist activities over the last 20 years, the loss of thousands of lives in New York and the destruction of those businesses is not a pin ******. the loss of 30 plus people in London is not a pin ******.
You can't negotiate with these terrorists, therefore they're not like common criminals. And I do buy that a lot of these terrorists are motivated by a pathological hatred of Western Nations and the threat to Islam, not through the annihalation of the Muslim faith, but buy the eventuallity that the people that live in these Muslim states are eventually going to get tired of the bullshinguard way that thier religion runs thier lives and keeps them in the dark ages.
Lenin once said that the aim of Terrorism was to terrorize, but what was forgotten in history was that Stalin called Terrorists useless fools, because they don't buy into a political aim, but they buy into the emotion of hate, and therefore are easy to kill.
somebody who goes out of thier way to plant a bomb on a bus full of woman and children isn't driven by a political aim, because someone who is driven by a political goal realizes that they eventually have to reconcile with thier enemy. The terrorists in London, and the pilots of the world trade center are an expression of hate generated by lies and deception and turned into simple minded cruise missiles.
As for a solution, there is no real solution. You can't back away from a war on terrorism, because these creeps will become emboldened by your weakness and keep trying to kill woman and children.
they're not a nation state with fixed assets so you can't bom thier war factories and take out thier infrastructure.
The only thing that you can do is take out thier leaders, and thier finacial backers, and force them to exhaust themselves by continually having to run. At the same time you have to find a way to dry up thier sources of ready made terrorists, and thats to bring the educational systems in these third world countries up to a first world standard. You also have to take apart the governments of the countries that support terrorism (and to some extent that does mean Saudi Arabia)
I also find it sad that he goes back to the whole support of Isreal thing. Why dosen't anyone ever tell the Palastines that Isreal is there to stay, live with it and find common ground with the Isreali government. Isreal is tired of the whole undeclared war with Palestine and has shown this time and time again by trying to trade land for peace only to have some crazy blow up a bar or a market. Yes Isreal has to bend, but they've already done that. Palestine has to do its part and kill off the Hamas and Hezbollah groups instead of accomidating them, something that Abbas (sp?) has shown that he's unwilling to do.
The Arabs nations want to bitch about American hypocrisy, maybe they should look in the mirror first, they're just as big of a cause in creating world wide terrorism.
Sorry for the rant, and even more sorry for the spelling mistakes, but its late and I'm tired.
