Likewise I thought the Ice was thicker than it was...and I wondered how they painted the lines IN THE ICE!
My other main misconception was with the Famous "Scooter" Line, for the Blackhawks: Doug Mohns, Stan Mikita, Ken Wharram... I thought is was a role, and that ALL teams had a Scooter line, to go with a Power Play line and a Penalty Kill line.
I also wondered how the Goaltenders avoided getting hit in the face with the puck...after all...Only Jacques Plante wore a mask!
Of course, for me there is still only one "Mr. Goalie"...Glenn Hall forever, #1 in my Heart, #1 in the rafters.
And I thought all table hockey sets only had Blue Toronto guys and Red Montreal Guys...until I started dating my wife who had a full set of tin O-6 players like the guy in my Avatar!

When I was young and in elementary I thought our WHL team was the equivalent of the farm team. And when you 'graduated' they would let you play for the Flames. ("they" being some mystical unknown) I wasn't aware of the draft at that age. I just thought that if you were just super good at hockey, you'd get telephoned up to play on the Hitmen, which was one "level" under the Flames.
Funnier thing is the contracts and money never even entered my mind. Basically being an NHL player was a measure of awesomeness, and you were so awesome you didn't even need money.

A girl I bartended with asked me where "Usalanee" was during the 2006 olympics. She thought it was a country that played for the Hockey Medal. She got really embarrassed when one of the many customers I got her to ask finally told her that Teemu Selanne was a hockey player from Finland.

I had no misconceptions. What can you say, I was a smart kid. Little did I know.

I used to think that players who weren't dressed for the game were players who failed to put their equipment on in time and therefore weren't allowed to play.

I went to my first NHL game and sat in the first row right behind Kelly Hrudey when he played for the Kings. I just focused the entire time on how strange his last name was. I couldn't figure out how it was spelled Hrudey and pronounced Rude-e.

The sole way to compare players was by how many points they had.

For the first couple of games I ever saw I couldn't see the puck going into the net on the small black TV. I thought the rules are such that when PBP man screams "SCORES!" an attacking team is awarded a goal, and the purpose of an action is to impress pbp man enough to make him say "scores"

not a misconception, but when i was really young like 7 or 8 i would storm up to my room and to get me out of my room my mom would yell " emergency flames, your missing it!!". I would race downstairs, just to find out i had to go to my grandmothers house..

I thought Peter Maher hated Lemelin because he'd always say "bad save, Lemelin" but I never heard him say that for Vernon.

I seemed don't know how to pronounce Vincent Damphousse's name for the longest time. I kept asking my friend about that "Damn House" guy.
Also when I was young, when I see someone wearing a jersey with their names on the back, I wonder why I can't find that player when I watch on TV. I did not understand that it is their name

I used to think that in hockey icing is when a defender skates behind the net with the puck.

To be fair, that one is a common misconception regardless of age. I remember "arguing" with a couple Hab fans not too long ago that it stood for hockey and they thought I was nuts.

I thought that players of opposing teams always hated each other. I was mortified when I found out that Flames players were hanging out with Oilers and Canucks players off the ice.

I only found this out a short while ago. I'm still mortified.

Before seeing a game in person, I thought the most impressive thing about NHL players was that they could somehow see the puck. I didn't realize that it was only nearly invisible on my tiny, super low definition television that was picking up half of the broadcast signal from the antenna on our roof.
Kids these days with their fancy HD TVs don't know how good they have it.

I recall listening to Flames radio broadcasts and hearing Peter Mahr use the expression "he gobbles up the puck" from time to time. I was never entirely clear on what to picture when he'd use this turn of phrase and I always had a vague notion that I should listen to the radio feed while at a game so that I could finally figure out what it means to "gobble up the puck."
