Nobody is born with racist or bigoted opinions or feelings. Those grow out of our experiences and our teachers. I find it interesting that people are getting on certian people's cases because they were not taught that the word is considered a racial slur.

We are not talking about a 5 year-old here, we are talking about a guy who could be a part of the government. If he doesn't know that using the term Jap is inappropriate then he's, umm, not fit to be part of the government because he's obviously got a few gaps in his head.
If someone truly doesn't know they are saying something offensive then they get a free-pass. This guy should know.

I was actually talking about a few people on this forum who are taking abuse for not knowing the meaning of the word "Jap", not the MP. Also, age is irrelevent. If you arent made aware of the double meanings of words, you can be just as blissfully ignorant at 50 as you are at 5.

I think you have it mixed up, the Japanese individual in the example would't understand the insult, while the outsider (I assume that Rubber Ducky isn't Japanese) would have found it offensive. I think that this from the horses mouth isn't exactly what you are trying to get across.
But can someone explain what I asked before, how is it racist instead of derogitory towards a nation. Unless the Japanese are a race, but I have never heard that to be the case.

Am I completely ignored here? By the likes of MMM even? JHChrist....Can anyone at least reference my posts and point out what Rouge and others are saying. Japs is ignorant. It's a race label tag like chinks, ####s or any other. Let's not get into it - acceptance and moving on is what's needed here not rampant justification. If you need help, let my wife or any of her friends (still quite a few in Calgary) come over and bash you over the head if you are looking for boundaries to pursue in your desire to redefine what racist comments are all about . There is no argument so give it up. [/b][/quote]
I understand that it is an iggnorant thing to say to the fullest degree, but at the same time is being ignorant towards the populace of a nation, really equitable to being racist towards the populace of a nation. I am not saying that what he said was right, justified, or not extremely rude, but I don't know whether that necessarly adds up to being racist in itself. The Japanese people (who the insult is refering to) are not a race, well at least no more than the population of Canada is a race, or the population of America is a race, or the population of Brazil is a race. I don't know whether my definition of race is skewed, but I never really saw it where the population of a nation is considered a race, merely because they are the population of a nation. I know you might say I am being woefully ignorant towards their plight, and towards the term, but I don't know whether it would be considered ignorant, any more than a term such as Polak or Canuck (obviously to refer to individuals from Poland and Ukraine respectively).
That being said, he obviously shouldn't have used the term, but I really have to question if it is racist, or just ignorant?

I assume your answer to your own question is no? They all come off as ignorant?
I don't know why you'd assume that. Though, if you've evidence of every MP being ignorant at one time or another, then I guess you're within your rights to believe that.
