That's great, but even more satisfying is gearing down from 5th to 3rd to slow down and hold speed for a corner or whatever, then hammering on it and gearing up again.

WRT spending $50K on a car...if you buy a $50K car and your other crap is covered first (money is still being put away for retirement, mortgage is being chipped away at nicely or is paid off, any other debts have been wiped clean or are at least being paid down, etc.), go for it. I think a fancy car should be after those other things. And if you have kids a fancy car should come after education fund savings and the other expenses it takes to provide a kid or kids with a nice upbringing (sports, clubs, new bikes, etc.).

There's a reason if you do it right only well-to-do people drive fancy cars. With easy access to debt now and the sense of entitlement a lot of people have, you see people in cars they can't afford all the time. Those people are dopes.

It does feel great...but it seems that it is getting harder and harder to find cars that offer manual transmissions these days. For me, getting a reliable, fast, wagon with a manual transmission pretty much limited me to the Subaru's (Legacy GT, Forester XT and Outback XT)

For this conversation...I would assume that for a middle aged woman that the joy of downshifting is probably lower down the 'must-have' list.

FWIW this is the dream family car for me...

Yep, I'm in the exact same boat. I want an all-wheel drive wagon with a manual transmission, and pretty much the only option that carries all 3 of those features anymore is a Subaru. I'd love if it the 3 series or A3 would offer that combo, but sadly those companies aren't really in the business of satisfying enthusiasts anymore.

And before anyone brings them up...flappy paddles can lick my nut-sack.

Those new Golf wagons look really nice for an econo-box. I wonder if there are plans to put out a GTI version? That would be cool, although all of the upper-end VWs, including the GTI, are still short about 1-200hp IMO. Plus I don't trust VWs at all from a reliability standpoint, but I can't help liking them anyway.

That's nearly an hour and half a day . . . every single day. I'm sure I've said it here before, I'd lose my mind if I had to commute that much.

No kidding. My usual commute downtown is about 45 minutes door to door and it annoys me to no end. I could not imagine commuting from a satellite community to downtown on a daily basis.

The closest thing to a Volvo SUV is the X90, which is still more of a Crossover / Wagon type vehicle.

The S60 is great.

She could also look at the C70 as its a hardtop convert with AWD and a turbo... pretty nice cars.

I've never driven a Volvo. They don't strike me as enthusiasts' cars. Don't get me wrong, they seem very nice, but they don't look sporty/fun to me. Guess I'll have to take one for a rip.

I have a 2005 XC90. Nothing better on a long road trip. Comfortable and quiet and would definitely look at getting another one when this one is at the end of it's life (currently about 75k miles).

You do have to be careful with a couple of the years if you are buying used as they didn't use a robust enough tranny for the 6-cylinder model and those tend to drop at 80k km (though free replacement from what I've heard).

My mom and dad love my moms car (s40 T5).

IMO its a great car but the chassis is pretty terrible, maybe its better now (we bought an 05, first model year) but it has some pretty stupid characteristics. For example i can get the back end of the damn thing to step out just by flicking the wheel, im not talking enough to do a Scandinavian flick per say, but lets say doing a slalom would easily make the tail end of the car come out. Many times in the winter the back end of the car will come out under high cornering. IMO a car like this should be made to understeer, not oversteer under certain circumstance.

Having said that, i drove an S60R a couple years ago and was in heaven, the magnetic shock system was awesome, my dad was actually looking at one before he settled on his MazdaSpeed 6.
