I can't quite believe the demand for the iPad in the US right now. I figured that I'd be able to head over to the Apple store in Boston and pick up a wifi model no problem, but I was dead wrong. It turns out that there are people lining up to buy the thing at 2AM! A month after release! I doubt anyone would even think of somewhere other than maybe Best Buy to get a XOOM, and the playbook isn't even on the radar. Advertising is 100% iPad in Boston and New York.
Craziness!

I'm really torn which direction to go with my PDA, Tablet and computer. There's a lot of confusion in the market and it is reminding me somewhat of the HD Vs. BlueRay battle that went on. I hate buying technology I get used to only for it to completely change.
I'm actually considering the Blackberry Playbook but hate how little functionality it has right now...decisions decisions.
I still don't get the whole tablet thing. I'm not bashing it, I'm just approaching it from the angle that I find it quite cool and am tempted to get one but am afraid that I don't really need the darn thing.
I have a PC, Laptop, smartphone(Blackberry) and ipod touch, do I really need a tablet?

I dunno, all I know is that I kinda want one....
No, you don't need it at all. I have exactly what you had... and I got an iPad and love it.
It's not a need, but it's fantastic for leaving in the living room to pick up for random use. A lot better in this regard then a laptop.
If I was in the situation where I could only have one thing... it wouldn't be picked over a laptop.. or a desk top... but if you want one, and can justify the expense to yourself or the wifey, go for it.

What is everyones thoughts on a tablet in the workplace? I am not talking about replacing a workstation for someone that needs one, but for someone that does not do a lot of intensive work, just uses apps like Office and such.
One thing that caught my attention is that we can run citrix apps on an iPad and our VoIP provider as an app as well. So in theory we should be able to use an iPad as a remote workstation. I have not tested this yet but have seen a few videos of people doing this and it looks pretty nice and easy. Also I am thinking that for our sales group, if they can go to a clients site and show they can run our software on an iPad via citrix that could be impressive.
^ Same here. It's a not a major use I thought of when buying it, but being able to take all notes on it is actually quite great. You never run out of paper and need to get a new notepad.

I feel this is a good comment on the necessity of the iPad. I'd probably pick one over a laptop, but beyond that I'd rather have a desktop or even an iPhone first. It's a fantastic secondary device. Replacing everything with an iPad could be quite frustrating, but adding it to your line of computers works out quite well.
It fits really well into that "oh man I don't want to go get my laptop" space.
As for using it in the workplace I love having it. It's functional enough to have everything within a few taps in a meeting while also being small enough to keep out of your way. I also like that the battery is strong so you aren't always hunting for a plugin.
I take all my notes in evernote so that when I'm done not only is it available on every computer I own (phone included), but when I need to retrieve a note I can do a search for keywords. I always took notes before in a book and lost them.
Edit: Holy crap the playbook came out today? I haven't heard anything. Anybody have one?
picked up, and am posting from my new 32Gb Playbook. I'm a frequent business traveler, student, and impatient tech junkie so I should be able to give you guys a good review.
So far so good though. Keyboard seems nice, processer is quick, and it feels fairly user friendly.
The thing that kinda sucks is no 3G (although I paired it with my torch, so that doesn't matter), no skype capability yet, and no email interface unless I'm paired with my bberry.
So all in all it's pretty slick if you have a Rim smartphone, but probably not so good if you don't.
hmmmmm just found gmail on this thing. So it it actually does have an email interface (I sync all my email with gmail) so in that sense it works fine for me.
Kinda wish it had a trackball on it though, because my brain keeps looking for one to bring me back to my home menu.
Hopefully I can run a bluetooth mouse and number pad for excel sheets too. The guy at Best buy said I could, but he wasn't sure. If I can start running a lot of programs I use for work on this thing it's going to be worth every penny!!!
We just picked one up at the office as well. Not quite sure why as we just got an Ipad. Hopefully I can get my hands on it and try and change my biased views on it compared to my ipad 1
The reviews of Playbook I have read have said essentially that it isn't polished enough yet. They released it too soon and while the potential is there, it may be hurt by negative publicity.

it won't run java (or at least it wouldn't run java on a site I use for networking).
The touch screen is also taking some getting used to, it's hard to get my cursor in the right spot to edit spelling errors. I also can't seem to hit hyperlinks on web pages very easily, and it's taking a lot of tapping in the same place to select them.
It runs word and excel beautifully though. Spreadsheets are easy to read and edit.
processor is really fast.
not a huge fan of the gmail interface, mainly because it's hard to select the email I want. Again, I wish there was a trackball to do it.
awesome display (runs hd)
I really wish there was a usb port for my thumbdrive
After our first day with the BlackBerry Playbook, the device looks like something that might appeal to hardcore BlackBerry users who just want a larger screen for Web browsing and managing the e-mail on their phone.

Man... no USB port? That's gotta be a deal-breaker...
?
It has USB and HDMI.
Or are you trolling?
