I honestly get the most laughs from horror movies in general. They're fun, it's not that deep.

Anora was excellent, easily one of my favorites this year. Written and directed by Sean Baker, same guy who did Red Rocket, The Florida Project, Tangerine and Starlet.

Just watched "The Taste of Things" (French, with subs)... a lovely, quiet quasi-historical film about two people and their passion for food...and each other. A beautiful and thoughtful meditation on french cuisine, its past, its preparation and its enjoyment. Now one of my top ten food movies. Juliette Binoche is amazing.

Similarly, I just watched Tampopo. Really charming and odd Japanese comedy about ramen which they playfully called the first "ramen Western".

"Outwardly preposterous but everything works"

Might just be the best film description I've ever heard.

Now thats a 'pull quote.'

Tampopo is one of those movies that 1/3 of the people in the Criterion closet pick so I assume it’s a feat of film-making but I’ve never seen it.

Trap is crap. I wish I was wittier because that’s such a cliche review, but the movie is cliche to the core so it fits.

Battle Beyond the Stars is one of those post-Star Wars sci-fi clones, but a really solid one. Special effects and art direction are by a very young James Cameron:

How the hell has the new Venom made almost $400M worldwide? It's just as bad as The Marvels or Morbius.

Anyone excited for the new Gladiator? I'll go see it but I'm not hyped for some reason.

Is Megalopolis worth watching?

Also watched The Apprentice. Jeremy Strong was excellent and the story very interesting. But the actor they got to play Trump was terrible I felt. Not as an actor but he didn't look enough like him, the voice and cadence was very different. I kept waiting for it to kick in as he evolved more into the Trump we see now but was left very disappointed by their selection of a lead. Which is odd cause Sebastian had to undergo alot of prosthetics etc to do the part and I think he's a good actor. But they really flubbed portraying Trump and it took away from the movie. Still 7/10 but could of been a 9/10 movie if they'd really nailed the lead.

I thought Stan did a great job. It was subtle and i noticed Trump's cadence peaking out every once in a while. I was worried they would go to hard on his more recent speech patterns and make him more of a caricature.

Does anyone have any Criterion collection recommendations? They are having their annual sale this month and wanted to pick up a few I haven't seen before.

Where are you ordering from? I know some of the Canadian distributors tend to do their own Criterion sales simultaneously but they're always expensive regardless.

Unfortunately I've barely seen any of their collection and only own a few (I have the new Seven Samurai 4K arriving any day now) but would recommend Peeping Tom, Blow Out, Jigoku, House, Cure, Memories of Murder, Secret Sunshine, and Tampopo as recently discussed.

The 4K Criterion Seven Samurai is $100 on Amazon lol. No, I think I'll just keep stealing them.

Normally I buy my titles from Unobstructed View but lately it's actually cheaper to buy from Amazon.Com during the sale.

This time so far I've picked up Last Days of Disco, My Dinner with Andre, Happiness and Night of the Living Dead.

Seven Samurai in 4K from Unobstructed View right now is on sale for $50

Is the Godzilla box set back in stock? That or the Cassavetes box if you're a fan. Also:

Five Easy Pieces
Harold & Maude
Grey Gardens
Being There
Portrait of a Lady on Fire

and Tampopo?

I have about 50 or so Criterion movies. Some of the ones you would expect, but I found that the fun of the collection is that you can pick up a film almost at random and uncover something of value. I have some weird ones. One of my favorite directors (Suzuki) was found this way.

This method may only work with the lower number releases, as I think they started playing a little fast and loose once they started the streaming service.

I'm a bit late to the conversation but as others kind of said, almost all the good horror movies in the past decade haven't been based on jump scares and cheap "GOTCHA's". They're based on creepy ideas and smart thinking which is why the genre has been rejuvenated and is so well received by the top two non mainstream film studios A24 and Neon.

I could not be happier with where the genre is right now and the direction it's headed.
