If the team is not playing well and it is looking like a rebuild year, I think it’s easier to justify sending Gridin down. But if the team is winning and Gridin is a contributor to that winning, I think Conroy will have to try to make some room. Really tough to send the kid down and say “I’ll find some room for you at some point - just keep playing well on the Wranglers till then.”
Trading Sharangovich and/or Farabee are the first options that come to mind but trading them early in the season would likely be trading them at their lowest value. Not sure Conroy will want to do that.
|
If that Miromanov for Husso trade happens, that will help. They just send Honzek down and run with 14 forwards and 7 D. If not, I think Miromanov goes on waivers and they run 14 and 7. Hard to say if Gridin can keep this up, but he's looking like the real deal.

You can't trade a guy (Sharangovich) that is in the 1st year of a 5 year contract that you signed him to.
And Farabee, unfortunately, is not movable unless you're attaching assets to him. He's got 3yrs left (including this year) at a $5M cap hit, and is actually owed $18M over that period.

Yeah you can, you just gave him a guaranteed contract and a pile of money. If you can upgrade the position, you do. He doesn’t care where he gets to be a millionaire.
Where did this dumb narrative come from?
This is not a nice guy contest.

Sunk cost fallacy. Their value may not ever be higher. They could actually get worse.
IMO if there is a taker for either player and they want to send us a project or picks I’d certainly listen. Project would have to address a positional need. IDK, I have low faith in either guy. They just look defeated to me, and there isn’t a team that’s lighter on players than the Flames, almost to a fault.
They are adults accountable to large contracts they agreed to. If the team’s resources are not enough to help them, then I hope they spent the summer seeking out help on their own. A professional athlete needs to prepare themselves mind and body. Neither looks ready to me. Certainly not for the 1st line.

The only answer to the Flames log jam at forward is to acquire Jason Robertson.
I can't show my work, but I'm pretty sure the math checks out.

Has a player ever been traded in the 1st year of a long term contract, by the same GM who signed the player to that contract?

It came from Darryl trading Andrew Ference to Boston immediately after he signed a 3-year extension.
It’s why they had so many NMCs at the end of the Iggy era.
So let’s not do that to ourselves for no reason if we don’t have to.

Matthew Tkachuk was a sign and trade.

Somehow the math got better.
Thinkin' about having Robertson, Coronato, and Gridin all sniping from the wings?

Tkachuk knew it was a sign-and-trade. Everybody knew. He wouldn't have signed that deal to stay here. He only signed because he knew he was going to be traded to a team he wanted to play for.
Not the same thing at all.

Dude, you think their funk has been 1 game?
Yegor had an injury, and he finished strong. I'll concede that. But Farabee? Give me a break.
Regardless. Any player should be available if it helps CC improve the team.

Yeah, I know.
It met his ask but it just goes to show that it doesn’t happen.

A true sign and trade like Tkachuk, where the signing was a part of the trade itself is not the same as a sign, play him, decide you now want to trade him.

Don't know and don't care. What does history have to do with making Flames better in 2025?

I'm not going to research the specifics of that deal, or the culture around the team at the time. I doubt that is why there were so many NMCs. That instrument is part of complex negotiations and has its own intrinsic value that agents are obligated to extract for their clients. They were included in the contracts back then in lieu of cash IMO.
CC signed Yegor at the peak of the market. Yegor has not held up his part of that contract. If CC trades him, I don't think other players are going to plan their contracts around what CC did with Yegor. They all have jobs to do. All players know they can be traded any time.

Sharangovich was a ghost last year.
Least physical player in the league.
