Casablanca is my favourite movie. I've seen it at least 40 times. The principal things it has going for it are the writing, obviously; the performances that make nearly every character likable; the atmosphere (you can feel the sense of desperation thinly veiled beneath the party atmosphere at Rick's); and the pacing, which is far ahead of its time.

But the thing that people watching it for the first time usually don't consider is that the soul of the movie comes from the fact that it was literally made DURING World War II, and every actor in that film was currently being affected by that ongoing war to some degree - some people very personally. When Laszlo leads La Marsaillaise and you see Madeleine Lebeau crying, that's not acting. Many of the people on screen, including her, had literally escaped Europe as the Nazis advanced. That is unique and could only be captured at that time.

All this chatter made me order the 4K Blu Ray of Casablanca, it gets delivered tonight. It's been a solid 15 years since I last watched it, and am excited to get to it.

Turns out getting back to basics and not over complicating things was the answer. We didn't need a grandiose arc about human nature/origin starring multiple Fassbender characters (as brilliant as he is).
Damn you're annoying.

I think Prometheus and Alien Covenant get slammed a bit too hard - and they even did a good job of incorporiating Promethus into Romulus in a (somewhat) minor way.

You can't make an 'Alien' movie very often - and Romulus is very much an 'Alien' movie. What happens next with the series will be interesting. Are they going to gather the troops and make the next 'Aliens'? Or keep down this path of claustrophobic terror that was used in Alien and Romulus.

Mississippi Burning is incredible. I remember watching it as a kid and not appreciating it, I was too young. It's so well written and Dafoe and Gene Hackman ####ing kill it.

Sam does a poor job pretending to play the piano. Literally unwatchable.

Why do you take things to a personal place?

It's really unnecessary. It's just movies, and there isn't even much of a fundamental disagreement in your response.

There's a TV series on the way:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien:_Earth

Takes place 3 decades before Alien, so around the same time as Covenant.

Also, Premetheus was awesome. Covenant was just okay but pretty bland.

Yes, you are absolutely correct. I remember seeing that around the time it came out and it ####ing shook me to my core. It's quite underappreciated in film history.

"The old man was just so full of hate that he didn't know that bein' poor was what was killin' him," is one of the all-time best lines in a movie.

I also loved Badja Djola's brief appearance as the "special agent" who interrogated the mayor played by R. Lee Ermey. It was the first movie Ermey appeared in after his breakthrough role in Full Metal Jacket, the first chance he got to play a role other than a drill instructor or other soldier, and he was great! In that scene with Djola he was so convincing playing the scared-####less mayor. Djola's buttery-smooth voice was just *chef's kiss*.

Alien Romulus was great. I loved the 70s/80s aesthetic of the technology, ships, and set design. And the atmosphere was very reminiscent of the first two films, right down to the musical score. Overall, a pretty solid movie and an entertaining standalone story within the larger franchise.

Speaking of which, they just wrapped filming on the upcoming TV series starring Timothy Olyphant, which apparently takes place about 30 years before the original 1979 film. I'm looking forward to checking that one out. It's written and produced by Noah Hawley (Fargo), so I have high hopes.

I saw Blink Twice last night. I don't know what to think of that one. It'll seem rather controversial, perhaps even timely considering recent events. It had a few creeps and made me feel unsettled. Yet I didn't love the movie. A good first attempt by Kravitz as a director, but I wouldn't rush out to the theatre to see it. Wait for it to come out on streaming instead.

Thought I better give Casablanca a go after all the hype in this thread. Yeah it was superb. One of the few films the elicits an emotional response and sticks in your mind after. Rick has to be one of my favourite movie characters. Loved his cynicism and such a rewarding character arc. Was also surprised at all the humour in dealing with some depressing subject matter. Read a bit about the making of and found it interesting that due to the motion picture restrictions at the time the ending may have been more predictable for contemporary audiences and the sex could only be heavily implied. Finally, I know As Time Goes By is the iconic song but I can’t get La Marseillaise out of my head.

Doing a complete 180, my daughter is growling out of Disney movies so we’ve been looking for new family movies to watch. A recent one was Spy Kids and my immediate reaction was what the hell am I watching? Was such a wild campy ride that fully leaned into the silliness. Even the bad effects seemed to fit in perfectly with the movies tone. Overall it was just a fun movie for all ages. Had to watch the 2nd one soon after but it didn’t live up to the first. Enjoyed Steve Buscemi but was otherwise bored and don’t think I’ll bother with the 3rd.

Well if she is growling at Disney movies there is only one logical next step!

Tarantino films.

Sharktopus vs. Whalewolf?

And if you think I just made that up, you are sorely mistaken.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3292154/

It even stars the famous Casper van Dien.

Hahaha. Now I’m wondering what the most kid appropriate Tarantino film is.

Jackie Brown is the least violent but is up there for swearing and the N word and I’m not sure a drug smuggling plot is suitable for children.

On the opposite end Kill Bill has no naughty language but is his most violent film. The violence is cartoonish though and it does have a happy ending with the hero victorious.

There is also Once Upon a Time in Hollywood which is relatively tame but I had trouble getting through this so would feel cruel to made a child watch it.

Finally was thinking Inglourious Basterds as the swearing is minimal and the violence is relatively moderate and in small batches, while having a happy ending of good triumphing over evil. Realised it’s half subtitled though.

Oh its definitely Reservoir Dogs.

Or maybe Pulp Fiction? She could go as 'The Gimp' for Halloween?

I watched the dessert storm war drama Courage Under Fire with Denzel Washington, Meg Ryan, Lou Diamond Phillips and Matt Damon. Meg Ryan's character is the first women up for the congressional medal of honor and Denzel Washington is investigating whether she should get it or not and as he hears contradicting testimony he struggles to get the truth. Washington is amazing in this, he really steals the show. I love these 90s mid budget drama's that don't seem to get made anymore.
