Today is the 37th anniversary of the release of Robocop, so naturally I had to finally watch it. Great flick, thought it worked as a great action film and as a satire against consumerism. One of the best 80s movies.

Every 80's baby's "I shouldn't have been allowed to watch this when I was a kid" movie. It's just so good, and it's remarkable how well it still holds up.

Anyone who loves this film as much as I do should check out Robodoc: The Making of Robocop. Being on the set with personalities like Peter Weller and Paul Verhoeven must have been frustratingly wild.

Yes and Yes.

Robodoc was referred in the Documentary thread and I'll re-iterate...Paul Verhoeven is a certified lunatic and I cant believe what he got away with when making that movie.

Robodoc is amazing.

And Paul Verhoeven is a madman.

Longlegs good.

Edit:

Robocop rules when you realize Verhouven is making a movie about a Cop being the American Jesus.

He briefly enters Hollywood to bless the world with a run of:

Robocop, Total Recall, Basic instinct, Showgirls, Starship Troopers, and Hollow Man.

All of these films are totally off the wall. They win two Academy Award Special Achievement awards, an Academy Award for Best Special Effects, 9 total Academy Award nominations, but also a Raspberry awards for worst film and director (Showgirls), for which he became one of the few directors to pick up their Raspberry Award and make an acceptance speech.

Then goes back to making indy Dutch films for 15 years.

Yeah. Certifiable lunatic.

Not saying that its a bad thing, just saying it is what it is. The man is out his goddamned mind.

Just got back from Twisters.

It's a lot of fun. Glen Powell is a legit movie star, and definitely carries a lot of the movie.

My tornado-obsessed son wants to see it this weekend so we'll probably hit it up, looks like a good theatre movie.

I think it's going to do big business at the box office.

I checked out Twisters as well. If you enjoyed the 1996 movie you'll like this one as well. Don't expect anything new (the layout is nearly the same), but it's a well-made movie. I don't think the 'cast if characters' is nearly the same as the original, but it's still a fun ride. Glen Powell might be the biggest rising star in Hollywood (him and Sydney Sweetney). Also it was interesting seeing the future Superman (David Corenswet) in the corporate weasel role.

Interesting to note Twisters is directed by Lee Isaac Chung, who also was behind Minari. Minari was a fantastic movie, and Chung knows that Tornado Alley area well, having grown up there.

I can see Powell doing a lot of blockbuster roles. Curious to see him act in something with more depth. Not sure if he’s got the acting chops.

Sydney Sweeney gives me Megan Fox/January Jones vibes. She can play one role really well but I’ve never found her convincing in anything else.

Have you seen Immaculate? She's quite good in that, and it's far different than her usual roles. I doubt she'll ever be a Cate Blanchett, Jodie Foster, or Frances McDormand level of acting... but I think she's shown to be quite capable of playing other roles than what you'd expect from her.

Disney re released The Lion King for the 30th anniversary, it not only holds up extremely well but it laps the current field of animated movies. Is it the best animated movie of all time? Top 5 at the very least IMO

It's up there, for sure. Depending on how you classify animated films. Disney had a run of early classics on old properties.

Bambi
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Sword in the Stone
Sleeping Beauty
Robin Hood
Jungle Book

Then with computer animation Toy Story and Finding Nemo should be considered.

The Iron Giant is one of the top 5 animated films of all time.

Any list of classic Disney animation that doesn't include Fantasia is horribly incomplete.

These are my top 5 animated movies in no particular order (might be forgetting one or two)

Lion King
Aladdin
Akira
Ghost in the Shell
Shrek

Hm: Fantastic Planet and Batman Mask of the Phantasm

Edit: Forgot about Ralph Bakshi and his films, American Pop would have to be on there somewhere

I watched Ghost in the Shell in University as part of a course. I still don't understand why anyone would praise it in terms of filmmaking. Even the story is so-so.

"Are you kidding? It's the pinnacle of Anime!" Really? Huh. Maybe Anime needs to go back...to the drawing board.

This is fantastic. No dialogue, just a cozy and charming movie. Basically the first 10 minutes of Up as a full length.
