i marvel at how angry some people are in this thread.

i enjoyed it. I enjoyed it more on the second time through. And I think it will have me guessing on where it will go over the next couple of years with the next round of the trilogy.

And I love that it's the biggest box office smash of 2017, notwithstanding that it was released on Dec 14. It achieved #1 status before the end of December.

The movie has a built in audience that guaranteed it would be the top movie of the year. It also opened in the holidays with no real competition

I don't really see anger here. Just a lot of mocking of the incoherent plot. My issue isn't so much with the movie, as the critics. I'm baffled at how anyone with basic movie and storytelling knowledge could give this movie anything more than an average rating.

This is pretty surprising to me:

Star Wars: The Last Jedi' underwhelms in China
Quote:
"The Last Jedi" has already been a monster hit around the world, but it fell short of earlier editions of the franchise in the world's second-largest market.

The latest installment opened to an estimated $28.7 million in China this weekend, according to datafrom Disney (DIS) shared with CNNMoney by Comscore (SCOR). A local comedy, "The Ex-File: The Return of the Exes," took top spot by raking in $78.7 million.

Previous releases of "Star Wars" movies in China have performed better: Comscore said "Rogue One" and "The Force Awakens" earned $30 million and $52 million in their first weekends respectively.

China really doesn't care about Star Wars. They never have.

I thought this was interesting.

Quote:
"I don't want to get too explicit, because I like people being able to have their own interpretations," he said. "But I think definitely the act of what he does at the end literally just takes everything out of him. That's a huge thing. Also... he's having his final act be something of myth-making in a way.

"It does go back a little bit to what he said at the beginning [of The Last Jedi]. 'What do you think one guy walking out there with a lightsaber [can do]?' The answer is: Create a legend that will spread hope. And once he's done that, combined with the physical toll it's taken on him, you can make the case that there's nothing more powerful that he could accomplish."

I've always thought that if you have to go back and explain something in a book or movie that you've created, that you've kind of failed at your job.

I think that the twist here should logically be, because we've now defined that Jedi users have a finite amount of power, that Luke basically sacrificed eternal life/the ability to become a Force Specter, to astro-project across the galaxy and save the rebels.

That way, Mark doesn't come back.

Sorry for the off-topic but is the image in your signature supposed to be squished like that?

Not necessarily. The director of Donnie Darko for example (Richard Kelly) has had to explain that movie countless times over the years, as has Ridley Scott with Blade Runner, or Stanley Kubrick with more than a couple of his films (The Shining, 2001, Eyes Wide Shut). Did those guys fail as directors because people still had questions about their films after viewing them, or because they were prompted to explain certain scenes during interviews? I would say no.

Not that I'm comparing TLJ to Kubrick, but I'm sure you get my point.

Apologies if this has been covered but this makes a great point that I haven’t seen discussed anywhere. Fans sidetracked by Snoke or Rey’s parents missing the “why did Luke let Han die?” angle. I like it.

So is the argument that Luke had a split second desire to kill Kylo because the force foretold that he would kill Han?

Luke didn't let Han die.

Luke wasn't using the force after Ben went bad. He went to the Island to die, crashed his ship into the water, and basically didn't use the Force because he went somewhere, where he didn't need to use the force.

He had all the fish and alien cow nipple juice that he needed.

Luke was bitter and viewed himself as a failure, and in a lot of ways he was.

He withdrew from something that gave him nothing but pain.

Yeah, I can guarantee that guy has already thought more about the story than the writers did.

Also, what's with the Twitter users writing articles through like 50 different tweets? You're missing the point of the whole platform. Just write an article somewhere else and post a link to it.

Luke going with the intention of confronting Kylo and his rising darkness and thinking of killing him is very un-jedi like.

Even if he saw a vision of Kylo killing his family and causing havoc wouldn't have effected Luke a trained Jedi in that way. "

Even Yoda the ultimate Jedi Master couldn't see premonitions clearly. When Luke talks to him about his visions Yoda reply that "Its difficult to see, always in motion the future is"

Luke would have realized that he was seeing one possibility of many. He would have tried to heal of redeem Ben.
