Russia poised to breach mysterious Antarctic lake

http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Features.../17157566.html

Quote:
For 15 million years, an icebound lake has remained sealed deep beneath Antarctica’s frozen crust, possibly hiding prehistoric or unknown life. Now Russian scientists are on the brink of piercing through to its secrets.

“There’s only a bit left to go,” Alexei Turkeyev, chief of the Russian polar Vostok Station, told Reuters by satellite phone. His team has drilled for weeks in a race to reach the lake, 3,750 metres (12,000 ft) beneath the polar ice cap, before the end of the brief Antarctic summer.
This is pretty interesting, however what will happen once it's breached?

Interesting point the article pointed out. This lake has been sealed off for millions of years but once the drill breaks through, it'll be contaminated forever. Wonder if they are trying to minimize the breach as much as possible

Yes, I just checked that - nothing posted about Tyche there or at Planetary Society yet.

There is a large asteroid named 258 Tyche:

No, there’s no proof of a giant planet in the outer solar system

I’m getting a lot of email and tweets about NASA supposedly having proof of a giant, Jupiter-sized planet orbiting the Sun way beyond Pluto. Let me be clear: while certainly possible, this idea is not at all proven, and in my opinion still pretty unlikely. As usual, this started as a more-or-less accurate media story and is getting inflated as it gets re-reported. As far as I can tell, the original report was in the UK paper The Independent.

Here’s the deal. Two astronomers, John Matese and Dan Whitmire, have theorized about the possibility of a previously-undiscovered planet way beyond Pluto for some time. This is not a crazy idea; we see planets orbiting other stars way out, and there’s other evidence big planets can be pretty far out from the Sun (mind you, evidence does not mean proof). As it happens, there are lots of chunks of ice orbiting the Sun pretty far out as well. Some of these have orbits which bring them into the inner solar system, and we seem them as long-period comets.

What Matese and Whitmire did was wonder how a big planet would affect the orbits of these comets. If you measured enough of them, would you see the effects of the gravity of this planet? They claim you can, and even gave the planet a tentative name: Tyche.

^ Haha. Whenever I see a new Astronomy Claim I instantly check his blog. The Media really should just call him up and ask his opinion before they sentsationalize a non-story.

Lol, even if this thing was out there, if it was heading straight for us, at it's current speed, in a steadily decaying orbit...it would get here, in I dunno, about 50,000 years..lol. Voyager would take about 600 years to get there.

The amount of conspiracy websites out there claiming OMG 2012 is coming! Nibiru has been found, NASA is covering it up! It's laughable.

**Waits for Mikey's response**
