Yeah he's not going to suddenly snap about a missed call after he's been though probably a ton throughout his career and go after an official.

They didn't even bring it up in the intermission until Francis decided to get his name out there. After the game hockey guys like Sutter and Button said reactionary he didn't mean to ect. Maybe a game or two MAYBE.
Next day after social media has gone ape#### based on a super slow-mo of one angle its "He must be suspended for a long time!"
The general consensus on facebook is that he was furious there was not call on the play and lost it on the REF. Why is NOBODY showing the other angle? I'll tell you why, CLICK BAIT!
|
Yes, he loses credibility for arguing a standard call for a line change was "anger" or "frustration".
But you lose all credibility for trying to revise history. This collision blew up on social media as soon as it happened. Francis did nothing to encourage anything that wasn't already happening as there was already much discussion about it before we even got to that intermission.
Also, the "general consensus on facebook"? How about a link, as we have already determined your word and your memory are both faulty.

“If Henderson had a Calgary jersey on do you think (Wideman) would have touched him?” one ex-ref asked. “If that was a lady standing there? An old man? Would he have hit him? There are a lot of excuses out there.”
|
Yeah, I think he would have hit anybody or anything in his way. He wasn't consciously thinking, hey now's my chance to hit an official. Still it looks bad and the NHL will need to suspend him for some games, if only for reputations sake. The general US media have no love for hockey and are quick to label it barbaric.

why does the NHL need to wait til Tuesday, this just gets the talking heads to talk more.
they could have announced a suspension this morning and be done with it.

Yeah it blew up on social media right away...to many of those watching the game and the network covering the game it wasn't really a big thing.
Even the officials who have the right to review a play AFTER the game and write an incident report chose to let it go
http://www.tsn.ca/radio/montreal-690...games-1.430310
5:45 or so
As for the facebook ect. go look...majority say deliberate and many say he hit the REF which he obviously didn't
Unless its 20plus games the NHL is not even saying its deliberate

I'm trying to put it like this to some of my friends who want the NHL to end Wideman's career,
How many times have you been caught looking at your phone and a person pops right in front of you. Heck even a door/wall catches you off guard if you aren't paying attention to whats directly infront of you. I know I've been caught a couple times looking at my phone and had the same result.
Wideman may have just had tunnel vision on the ice and a split second later Henderson/Preds player are all in the vicinity of him and it become a series of unfortunate events.

Because the NHL is required to offer Wideman a hearing, and anyone not associated with the All-Star Game have gone off on break.

It sounds like Bettman will be involved in the hearing and he's too busy hobnobbing at the ASG.

Probably because it's not a cut and dry issue and they need to discuss it. At least I hope that is the reason, there really is a lot of middle ground here regarding intent and circumstance.

it's 2016, can't they do hearings over video conferencing?

CP Poll says 5-10, that's good enough.

Sportsnet has an article where they interview a bunch of retired officials and they are not happy with Wideman and don't buy his excuse.
So if there is a silver lining here to this situation, hopefully the officials will have a bias against the Flames and Wideman for the rest of the year and we won't have to be subjected to that god awful powerplay.

How has anyone not commented on the fact that the Preds were breaking out of their zone and if Wideman had skated around the ref he would've been rocked again. The ref was sitting on the sides and jumped off the boards just prior to being hit.

Once again, everyone not at the ASG is on break.
Also, odds are high that it will be an in person hearing.

Have the Flames issued any statements about this?
I still think its unintentional. If you actually look at his skates it looks like he might even be trying to get out of the way at the last second but he gets his hands and stick up in a reactionary manner.
He will get a suspension and probably deserves one, intentional or not you can't touch an official and he has to be in better control of himself.
But the witch hunt right now is overboard.

Taking a while to get to 5000

I love how ridiculous the comparables are becoming in the media. What if it was an old man? What is an old man doing on the ice?
What if it were a box of puppies?
What if it was a marching band?
Who will stop Wideman's path of destruction?!?

I figure 5-10 is about right. Strong enough message that you can't touch the refs, but not so long that it gets into the historic bad acts territory of the NHL. (McSorley, Burtuzzi)

You're really hung up on this aspect, but I think it's irrelevant.

I'd just like to point out that Todd Bertuzzi missed a total of 20 games.

The guy actually hit is taking it better than most on social media...He could have given the automatic 10 gamer after the game after reviewing the play and he did not.
When he gets 5-10 games now people are gonna be going crazy, many are calling for the whole season or a lifetime ban....so ridiculous
