I've enjoyed reading on the device so far, but I feel like there is some serious price gouging going on right now.

They were cheaper until the agency pricing I mentioned above came in. As Burninator mentioned, costs have really gone up recently. There are still deals to be found, and plenty of free books as well, but recent books from the big publishers are priced a bit high in my opinion.
I've heard that the costs associated with printing and distributing a physical book are around $2 for paperback and $4-$5 for a hardcover (the rest of the price goes to editing, overhead, royalties, marketing, profit, etc., all of which would apply for ebooks too), and on top of that there's no need to worry about excess copies being remaindered. There are some additional costs associated with producing and distributing an ebook (e.g. formatting, and for older books where they aren't starting from a Word file some extensive proofreading), but those are mostly one-time costs so I think if ebooks aren't at least a bit cheaper than physical books there's some gouging going on.
