After hearing how people have supposedly stopped coming to Alberta because our economy is so terrible and are now flocking to Saskatchewan, I found it curious that the numbers speak to a completely different reality.

Inter provincal migration for Calgary is 8715 and Edmonton is 5482. In Saskatoon it is 929 and Regina 445. Even taking into account the population difference of the Alberta cities to the Saskatchewan cities, it is clear that far more Canadians are moving to the urban areas of Alberta than the urban areas of Saskatchewan. Perhaps these are some of the first years that the Saskatchewan cities haven't had negative inter-provincal migration and Saskatchewanites had to overstate the situation.

Hell even people from Saskatchewan won't move back to Saskatchewan...I think that alone proves it

I think it may have something to do with commuting patterns, which have not crossed the threshold designated by StatsCan.

In addition to there being design concerns as Bunk discussed, the leap-frogging of sprawl can be mitigated through spatial planning. This is the creation of integrated strategic plans drawn up on local and regional scales that reduce competition and increase cooperation. It is much easier for someone to achieve their goals by working with their neighbourhood and helping them with their's rather than simply competing with them.

It's to do with various commuting rules and formulas. There's some good information about it on SSP http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=178292

From Calgary's perspective, the city is building its own industrial around Stoney Trail, which is also in viewing distance to the mall. Once these new developments, as well as the surrounding development at Crossiron Mills is complete - probably within five years - the two cities will be joined as a continuous urban area.

Incidentally, I have no idea why StatsCan doesn't count Okotoks and the MD of Foothills in the Calgary CMA.
