Never been a fan of Wilco personally.

I made an effort to give that song a chance Troutman....I don't mind it, but I don't love it.

To really give them a chance, which album do you recommend I start with?

One of my favourite songs right now..Distant Doubloon from The View's latest album.

If you're not a big fan of their slow, moody stuff, I would give Being There a try. It's their second album and is pretty different than most of their other albums. Almost alt-country like their really early stuff, but some pretty hard rock songs in there as well.

EDIT: In particular "Outtasite (Outta Mind)" kicks ass.

What do you know about The xx, and Bat For Lashes?
I actually don't mind that Bat for Lashes record. As for the rest, Grizzly Bear I like and Animal Collective has kind of won me over. I just picked up the Rural Alberta Advantage record (which is an honorable mention according to Pitchfork) and I think it's great, but a top ten list without the Decemberists is easily dismissed.

Bunch of 20yr olds from London. I've been listening to it a bit, and I'd rate it as ok but highly overrated.
I can't really get into the vocals of either the male of female singers, they both seem to be putting on fake accents and intentionally pronouncing words oddly.
They have some potential, but I think they're just kids trying to take themselves too seriously right now and force a certain mood and style with their music. Comes off a bit over-produced.
My favorite song is the intro which has no vocals.

Really? I thought it was a pretty impressive debut. I would say my favorite is this one.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pib8eYDSFEI Nothing earth shattering but still pretty good in its own way!

Metacritic has now posted a survey of many 2009 Best Album polls:

Looks like Animal Collective and Phoenix are the critics' darlings this year.

I'm not Troutman but I'm a huge fan of Wilco. Probably the album that creates most fans for them is Yankee Hotel Foxtrot but I personally love the album Sky Blue Sky.

Sky Blue Sky is a really bland album. Easily the worst in their catalogue. I still like it, but I wouldn't suggest it to others.

And "The XX" not bad for a debut!
These lists are great! I think the two that I agree with most are Filter and The Guardian. I guess the critics didn't like Dark Horse...

My own 2009 list in progress:

1. Sonic Youth - The Eternal (we take them for granted, but this is a great record)

2. Modest Mouse - No One's First, And Your Next (B-sides are better than most bands A-sides)

3. Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca (saw them open TVOTR - most folks were like "what?", and I was like "oh yeah")

4. Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (catchy pop from France)

5. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz (new wave-y - Karen O is the best front-woman)

6. Metric - Fantasies (will you marry me Emily?)

7. Grant Hart - Hot Wax (made a better record than Bob Mould in 2009)

8. Dead Weather - Horehound (Alison Mosshart is more interesting in this band than The Kills)

9. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion (for headphones only)

10. Magneta Lane - Gambling With God (Canadian girls do best song of the year, Lady Bones)

Karen O & The Kids - Where The Wild Things Are Soundtrack (succeeds as a children's and adult's record)

Dark Was The Night - Compilation (two sides of killer, no filler)

Funny, I've been a fan since AM, and Uncle Tupelo before that, and I really like Sky Blue Sky as well as the new CD-They sort of lost me with YHF and A Ghost is Born-The past 2 Wilco Cds are perfect for drinking coffee and reading the paper on weekend mornings-like a comfortable robe.

Yeah, I thought they were simply awful at TVOTR.

The Arcade Fire song on DWTN is atrocious.

I guess that's kind of why I don't like the last two. Like I said, very calm and sort of bland. The previous efforts were substantially heavier, rocked harder, and/or were more experimental and introspective.

Don't get me wrong, I love certain songs off of Sky Blue Sky and Wilco (the album) but they don't stand up very well as complete albums. Hell, I even prefer the two albums they did with Billy Bragg to the most recent albums.
