That's one of the main reasons why I hate going to the gym. I am pretty sure a lot of the people that go there have other interests in mind. I just want to work out and get out. I don't need to have a chat about what I like doing on my weekends, what kind of music I like, etc.

Me too. Thats what MP3 players are for. Put the buds in and ignore everyone. (except for occasional glances at the hot chicks ).

Same, I just throw on the ipod.. Usually I ignore the chicks except for the occasional check out glace. I find if you ignore them and they are interested in you, they usually start the conversation anyhow.

I had a guy just tap me on the shoulder, so I took one out and he asked for the time. I told him and then he carried on the conversation. Crafty bugger.

The problem with buds is that you really have to turn them up to drown out the music the gym plays.

You can get the ones that you stick right in your ear to block everything out but I find them annoying when lifting weights. They work well when doing cardio though.

But in practice, smoking (and drinking for some people) is not something that can be done in moderation. Nicotine, being so highly addictive, makes smoking so habit forming that breathing and lung capacity is affected. It makes it hard to do cardio long enough to see any real benefits if you don't have the lung capacity to do it for more than 10 minutes at a time.

I started going to the gym back when I was a smoker (like 6 years ago), but it was pretty futile. After I quit, the difference was like night and day. The extra stamina makes it so much easier to get results and makes working out more tolerable/enjoyable.

It's funny because when I first quit smoking, I went through some weight gain like a lot of ex-smokers do. I remember my doctor telling at the time not to worry about it because healthy bodies come in a different shapes and sizes and that it is better from a health point of view to be a little overweight than to smoke.

No, I wouldn't ask for his number if I had no intentions of calling. I think that would be mean. I would just politely say that I was trying to focus on my workout and leave it at that.

... but I just bypass all of that and stay home to workout, except for once my spin classes start, but I can't imagine people chatting in that class.

Totally agree with you.. I quit smoking 3 years ago after 6 years and the difference is dramatic. I found exercising really difficult when I smoked, and gradually since I've quit my stamina and endurance has come back. It still hurts sometimes when running long distances but I figure over the next few years that will get better.

Thats why they have Curves...

Just kidding obviously. It is kind of sad actually that so many women get chased from co-ed gyms by horny guys. Of course I look sometimes, but there is nothing more annoying than someone trying to talk to you when you're working out.

Another tip I would give people is to try and multi-task when working out. I am trying to improve my Croatian and read Croatian books when working out. That way if I don't go to the gym, I feel double guilty, but when I do go, I feel like I am still getting other stuff done.

Also, for those days where you just don't think you can do it... just go but don't put any pressure on yourself. Do something light... even if it is just going through the motions and not really breaking a sweat, at least you are staying in the routine. Besides, half the time I do that, I end up evenutally getting into it while I'm there...

Speaking of unhealthy, hearing health seems to be something that barely registers on people's radars. I am amazed that some people seem to walk around 24/7 playing their iPods these days. It'll be great for hearing aid companies 10+ years down the road, I guess...

^^Is it actually a good workout or is it more strength stuff? Can you work up a sweat using it?
