I read in the Herald this morning that they might set it higher, because they know some people will hit the gas a bit. So they probably won't be setting it on 90 for an 80 road, I HOPE.

Anyway, my fingers are crossed. I like to speed by 20-30 at the maximum in the summer, so here's hoping it's set higher than that.

They showed a bunch of the options once on Mythbusters, and the only thing that beat the camera was a jet powered car that was doing ~500 mph.

And not even Redvan goes that fast.

So how long does it take to get a ticket from a Red Light camera in the mail?
I think I got nailed on Anderson and Acadia about three weeks back.

Exactly what I was thinking of, but I didn't even need to see the show to know that sprays and clear covers wouldn't work.

So you'd rather have more people injured in motor vehicle accidents than have the city come up with a better way to increase funding?

There have already been several studies finding a strong link between red light cameras and accidents, and this will surely just make it worse. Absolutely brutal.

Yes, there have been studies, but in different states (California for example), like I said. The numbers are different here, IIRC.

I can't help but totally agree. On roads like the ones we currently have there is no reason to be speeding. Don't get me wrong, I'll definitely speed from time to time but never in weather like this. If you get hit with a speeding ticket because you couldn't have safely stopped at the light then in my opinion the ticket is well deserved.

I realize I'll come off as the holier than thou type with a post like this but coming off in a positive light isn't my #1 concern on CP so here goes!

I can't say that I recall ever being in a position where I need to accelerate a whole lot to get through a light. Like somebody said before, when that light goes yellow, the people making left hand turns start creeping out to finish their turn and that concerns me.

I won't sit here and tell you that I'll never break the speed limit going through a yellow ... it's bound to happen eventually. I don't plan on it, but I'm sure the day will come. Should I get a ticket for the offense I won't be pleased but at the end of the day I will have broken the law and will have deserved the penalty. No big deal in my eyes.

edit: Numbers appear to be all over the map in terms of studies on red light camera safety. Some say it causes more accidents, some say less. One interesting study reported here says that while collisions went up large in part to people slamming on their brakes, fatality #'s ultimately went down.
