Well, where I park for Flames games I used to always see hookers as I walked away from my car. And when I say "always" I mean each and every time there would be several of them. Now I really don't see them. The only time I saw one was when I was waiting for my buddy one came up to my car- and I'm pretty sure she was a cop.

So I'm not sure if that means they've gotten rid of them, or if they've just moved somewhere else.

I work on 17 Avenue SW and I still see crack and meth addicted prostitutes hanging around. There is definitely an increase in hooker numbers during the Stampede, when the carny hookers come to town. The area around the Jesus Loves You Society is the worst.

Cops eye naming johns

UPDATED: 2007-11-24 02:25:17 MST

Men caught with prostitutes may no longer stay anonymous

By NADIA MOHARIB, SUN MEDIA

City cops are revisiting a policy which forbids them from releasing the names of johns picked up for trying to solicit prostitutes.

Organized crime Insp. Shaun Gissing said a Calgary Police Service policy put in place several years ago means a decision was made that names of men charged with sex-trade related offences are not released.

"It was determined by balancing a bunch of issues, such as stigma to the wife and children and the seriousness of the offence. So we would not release the names of sex-trade offenders attempting to buy the services of sex-trade workers," said Gissing.

"That is under review."

Gissing said the service routinely names people charged with offences, from impaired driving to assault and homicide, because once anyone is charged with any criminal offence "it becomes a matter of public record."
The policy regarding not naming johns was done out of respect to the families of men accused, he said.

"We didn't want to stigmatize the wife and children."

Now top brass is looking at the policies of other jurisdictions, and whether more would be gained from not naming men facing such charges, or releasing their names as a deterrent to others. While some criticize cops for the current policy and accuse them of protecting the men they try to punish, Gissing said that's not the intent.

"I imagine naming of anyone charged with any offence would be embarrassing, but this would be a lot more embarrassing," said Gissing.
"I don't look at (the policy) as protecting them. I look at it as showing compassion for families.

"We've basically taken a compassionate point of view of what it will do to a man's wife or children going to work or school the next day." Gissing said the policy will be reviewed during the next few months.

Isn't the whole point of this to get rid of "street" workers and try to clean up areas of the city, as the average street prostitute in Calgary is an arms length from drugs. An with drugs comes an increase in crime.

Now, I would guess that over 90% of the drug industry operates "behind doors", but the street-crack industry is harmful and causes societal problems.

If a guy wants to sleep with a prostitute, they should be using escort services. Those are there for a reason and safer.

We aren't going to get rid of drugs and prostitutes (oldest profession in the world), we just want to control the lower-end crack-whores.
