"They're" is a contraction of "they are". Too many people automatically think that an apostrophe denotes possession, and incorrectly use it instead of "their". As long as you remember it's a contraction, you'll remember this one.
"There" indicates a location. The easiest way to remember this is that it contains the word "here". Just remember that if you were a lot closer to the place you're talking about, it would be "here" instead of "there".
"Their" indicates the possession of something (or some things) by more than one person. I don't know of any easy hints to remember this one other than knowing what the other two mean, and using "their" when the other two don't fit. The only other hint I could think of is that it contains the word "heir", which is who gets your possessions when you die.

For some reason, this is the only message I post on where the Firefox spell checker doesn't work.
Does it work for everyone else, and why does it work everywhere else, but not here for me?

Must be the settings. I just right click and turn it on.

Hmmm, weird. It works if I do that, but I don't need to do that at any other forum. It just does it automatically everywhere else.
My Firefox settings are set to "Check spelling as I type", but that doesn't work on here, only if I click the "Spell check this field" option in the right click menu, and it resets if I go to a different page.
----
EDIT:
Okay, so I changed my user options from "WYSIWYG" editor to the Standard editor, and it now does the auto spell checker. I go to another forum that uses the same software, but version 3.6.7 and the WYSIWYG editor does the auto spell checker. It must be a setting in the WYSIWYG mode.

Ya mine to. I think it's the settings on the forum, probably helps speed the server up or something.

It shouldn't make any difference to the server because it uses the built-in Firefox dictionary from your own machine. There is no communication between your browser and the server until you hit "Submit".

The firefox spellcheck work on CP for me, I just have to manually turn it off or all the highlighted words get posted. I'd imagine it's because of the text boxes. Instead of seeing [ u ] words are actually underlined.

The reason I sometimes get upset by grammar and spelling is because the wrong use can totally change the meaning of what is being written. Then, when I finish and the sentece hasn't made any sense, I need to re-read it trying to figure out what was screwed up. That usually doesn't take too long, but when I am trying to read a 80 post thread every time I need to re-read a post it means I'm not thinking about the merit of the post.
And the errors that drive me nuts have generally been listed.
Just think of the "stupid" rule:
"Your stupid" means you own a stupid.
"You're stupid" means you are stupid.
"There stupid" means stupid is over there.
"Their stupid" means they own a stupid.
"They're stupid" means they are stupid.
And when I see a thread with the title like "Player X resigns" I always wonder why they decided to quit. Especially on thread titles, we need a spelling/grammar nazi mod.

It's "I couldn't care less," meaning you care so little about the topic that it's simply not possible for you to care any less.

That's my biggest pet peeve right now. Mainly because I've had people correct me when i've said "I couldn't care less". It's becoming more and more common to have "I could care less" on scripted shows. It's sad.

In the example you gave defense is not a verb. "Plays" is the verb, and "defense is a noun".
I think what you were going for was
A defenceman defends.

The rampant mis-use of then for than (and vice versa)has reached epic proportions on the internet.
I've even read it in "journalists" blogs/stories.
The two words have such different meanings yet they are exchanged for one another like their and there.
Though it's niether hear nor their.

Grammatically, I hate the misuse of the word 'literally'.
It is often used in the exact opposite way it's meant for.
