I wonder if vehicular manslaughter charges would still apply if the victim wasn't wearing a seatbelt. Is there any recognition of that fact?

They arrested someone for this

A longtime friend who once lavished Chad Largy with a limo ride on his birthday has been charged with his murder.
---
A burned-out cube van rented by the suspect has also been discovered, said Staff Sgt. Barry Cochran of the homicide unit. The charred truck was abandoned in Manchester industrial park, near 5th Street and 55th Avenue S.E.

Sounds like a real genius.

I know I'm going to come across as a completely insensitive jackass when I say this, but:

"It's mind boggling," Miranda, 18, said of the arrest. "It doesn't make sense to me."

I read the story and it makes sense to me. Obviously I'm being very presumptuous here, but if you can put 2 and 2 together...

Family said the friend would loan Largy money, let him borrow his car and, one year ago, took him out in a stretch limousine for his birthday.

...you can quickly conclude, at the very least, he may have been in debt to this "friend".

And to now fend off any potential attacks, I do feel very sorry for his family members for their loss.
