The summer of 2022 the Flames lost out on the top free agent but they signed the number 2 guy in Kadri.

I think this team is missing the star forward and in 2-3 years they will be a top destination for players who want to be in Canada. The new rink, Wolf, 26 1st, Parekh, and several other budding prospects will entice other players to sign up
The worst part of Chucky and Gaudreau leaving in the same offseason was the beginning of this narrative.

It's so overblown.

Well, Mark Stone refusing to talk to them came earlier.

Did Mark Stone refuse to talk to them...or did he just want $10.5M which the Flames couldn't afford after signing Neal (Tre could never have open cap space) and with Tkachuk as a RFA that offseason.

I heard he wouldn't talk contract killing the deal.

From what I remember is that Tre wouldn't include Valimaki in a rental deal and Stone made it clear it was a rental trade

We will never know the full story, but I believe that Treliving's offers the summer before was a big part of why Johnny left.

Tkachuk was also rumored to be willing to stay 8 years the summer before but was offered a bad contract based the the previous year's performance. If Trevling made a better offer, I bet they both stayed and I bet Tkachuk asked to leave when they lost Johnny even though he denies it.

Conroy is doing a better job at signing the guys he wants long term early. I think fans will always panic that players will want to leave, but I doubt it is an issue if they are competitive.

Edmonton is normally worse off than we are for free agents and players leaving. As long as they have McDavid, they seem to retain players.

I think the biggest factor was Covid and border issues.

Stone spent a lot of time on LTIR, which ended up benefiting Vegas but would not have benefited us in the same way I think

Still, I believe Stone would have pushed us past Colorado that year, and maybe further.

It was clearly a rental because Stone refused to get on the phone to talk to Calgary about an extension (also Winnipeg) but was happy to do so with LV.

Posters on CP: "Sportsnet and Friedman hate us and ignore us!"

Posters on this thread dedicating one of about 30 of Friedman's intros directly on Calgary: "NOT LIKE THIS!!!"

I had heard his ask was a firm $10.5M which killed the deal since Flames weren't going to give him the Kane, Toews, etc $84 x 8 deal as a top 10 paid player in the league.

But yeah maybe it was just he wouldn't talk contract at all and was deadset on playing with his junior GM in Vegas.

To be fair, he isn't wrong. The Flames are kind of in a dangerous position. Opposing GMs are always looking to take advantage of a team that's floundering.

Ah man, after we treated his brother so well! What could he have against the Flames?

Not that his bro came out poorly from all the 'want him, don't want him' nonsense. But I am guessing that an outsider would look at that and interpret it as GMBT has no idea what he is doing.

Mark probably thought, where am I going to get paid and where am I going to win?

There were holes in the Flames we could all see back then. And GMBT was not the guy to fix them.

Only when they have real pressure to win
A team like Tampa is actually on the highway to the dsnger zone

... and we've won, what, one hockey trade in the last 10 years?

The trade that brought Elias and Noah here is the only trade I can think of that substantively improved the Flames.

Everything else has involved futures and reclamation projects.

What am I forgetting?

Markstrom trade feels like a haul (Bahl+Reschny), I would consider that a win (especially since it cleared the way for Wolf).

Lindholm deal is a already a decisive win.

"The Flames missed the playoffs seven straight seasons at the turn of the century, and five straight seasons last decade. It’s soul-crushing, and those of us on the outside don’t always recognize the internal damage, fear and stress that causes. It leaves scars. You don’t forget."

This sounds overly dramatic. In a 32 team league where only 16 teams make the playoffs, your long-term expectation should be that you miss the playoffs in half of your seasons. While of course your goal is to be better than average, I would worry about any organization that has their soul-crushed by the fear and stress of achieving what you statistically should have expected to achieve. I doubt it really works this way.
