I used to work with guy who did exactly that during Trump 1.0. Didn't like the Lib/woke/gay direction Alberta was apparently headed and wanted to get out. Didn't have the proper education or in-demand skillset you need to work in the US, so he went back to University and got himself a nice in-demand degree and moved down south. Says he's happy there and has no regrets. Strange as it sounds, I actually respect him for doing all that and leaving, then staying here and whining like most separatists do.

Went really well. All positive feedback about the petition. People are usually in a good mood when they're getting ice cream.

One CPer showed up!

There are definitely a few of you very passionate about signing and getting signatures to stay in Canada.
What are some of the major reasons you would not support Western independence and some of the major advantages you see for Albertans if we stay?

Good lord man, "if we stay" as if this is some rational thing that anyone with more than 3 brain cells considers a workable idea.

The advantages are not following mentally stunted morons off a cliff because you believe the mountains of lies about the benefits of seperation, and that there is any practical way it could even happen.

In a nutshell, leaving Canada just means becoming a US territory.

Our economy would be in the toilet overnight. Who would give us favourable trade terms? The country we just left out of spite, or the one that's already happy to ignore trade agreements with allies to try to bully them into agreeing to worse ones.

I said it to someone else earlier, but Alberta would be independent shorter than Texas or California were. The US is already funding Alberta separatism, at least according to one of the people behind it. They'd immediately use economic pressure to gain Alberta as a territory.

And if you think Alberta's position within Canada is bad, then you'd really hate that deal; things would be 10x worse as an American territory. They'd extract our resources for profit and leave us with nothing. They'd give us the Puerto Rico treatment with no voting rights.

If Alberta had 10x the population, a stronger economy, and wasn't landlocked, then maybe it would be a different story.

Call me crazy, but I'd rather find real solutions than cut off my nose to spite my face

Please list these "major advantages". Keep in mind that separation means that you now have to build and pay for your own military, medical and social infrastructures (as well, good luck getting a qualified doctors here), and good luck getting any pipeline built or increased resource exports outside of our landlocked country without massive taxes, tariffs and hurdles (good luck getting a pipeline through Washington, if that's what you're thinking). Separatists seemingly don't understand any of this, and it's such a stupid idea it shouldn't even be thought about. There are a ton of benefits to staying in Canada - right where we should be and should always be.

Life is pretty f'n great here; I've built a fantastic life for myself and the people I care about. My life was built upon the life my parents built for themselves and their family, all from opportunities here in Canada. You're going to have to convince people why we should leave, not turn the question around.

Major advantages? Please cite some—even minor advantages would do. This is a really stupid idea.

Agree for sure. But there’s a group that would say life here, for our kids, can be better, much better, within a strong Canada that needs to get out of its own way. Why did it take Trump basically threatening to derail the Canadian economy to get the feds and the provinces to get serious about lowering interprovincial trade barriers? Or fast track permits? Canada is seriously over-regulated and as I think about it that might be one of our biggest problems per se.

Edit: to clarify, I think the whole separation thing is nonsense and a distraction. Some think Alberta should use a decent yes vote as a means to negotiate a better arrangement for Alberta within confederation. That might have some merit. The problem is unfortunately we just don’t have the bargaining power of Quebec or Ontario and it’s frustrating. And the whole separation threat makes us look foolish.

About 25 in two hours, which was okay for something I set up impromptu with little notice. I was by myself.

All of the proposed benefits of separation are economic and political. I don’t doubt that there could be some economic advantage - though there’s also risk - and no doubt many here would be happy being in 100% control politically. But we’d be a small landlocked country with no profile or clout on the international scene, whose only raison d’être is that we have oil. Would there be any talk of separation except for the fact that we want to make more money from oil? That’s no rational for independence.

Canada is a G7 country that has presence internationally. We are the best hockey nation in earth and do well at the olympics and other major events. We have our own music, tv and (a few) movies. Canada has a very positive international reputation. Alberta is a few smallish cities and a heap of small towns. No one knows or cares about Alberta, unless you mention Banff. We have kind and decent people all across the country that still share common values and decency and are noticeably different from our friends to the south. Travel the country and see how similar the every day people are.

Maybe these things don’t matter to you but they matter. They define us as a nation and a people, as does our common history. It’s an identity. What is Alberta’s identity beyond ‘hard-working folk’ (as if no one else works hard) and rodeos? Culture and identity are what defines a country not money and politics.

There are definitely things that should change in regard to Alberta’s relationship with Ottawa but national borders in not one of them.

I carry my clip board and creds around wherever I go (walking the dog picking up from suppliers asking delivery ppl etc) and I’m getting an average of 4 a day. I don’t door knock I just talk to my neighbours when I see them. A couple have said no but usually they are happy to sign.

BC will be obligated to build it for us, too. If you read international law interpreted by a Rodeo Clown "Lawyer."

Will there be some setups in the downtown +15's in the coming months?

I'm just reminded of the RECALL THE MAYOR guy that was just at various places in the +15's and while it was met with a lot of derision, it seemed to generate a ton of engagement (and likely lots of signatures too).
