If this is to open up a spot for Solovyov I'm all for it. More youth less veterans.

Other than being 7/8th defensemen, I'm not sure the situations are comparable.
What makes them comparable is that the team got maximum LTIR benefit by having Oesterle on the roster opening night. I strongly suspect he would have been waived and sent down otherwise.

So this is more to keep Zary in the lineup vs shaking up the room right?

He could also be placed on waivers, but not sent down, and possibly be included in a future trade.

Seems like a bit of a dick move. He was signed as the 7th defenceman, not sure what they were expecting of him. It’s not going to make the high salary guys play any better, if anything it reflects badly on the organization that they punish the lowest guy on the ladder “to send a message”.

Dick move? This is the NHL. Produce or you can beat it

Flames might not be able to field a team if that’s where the bar is set.

Every time Oesterle touches the puck, there’s a scoring chance against within 15 seconds.

I promise you Oesterle doesn't care, he's a 31 year old journeyman who's never played a full 82, and has never had a positive +/- since becoming a "full time" NHL'er. He's on a one way contract, I get the feeling he's fine getting paid his million dollars to play easier hockey and actually win some games.

Now we need Pelts back so we can waive the second lowest guy on the ladder: Hunt.

At the end of the day, a "7th defenseman" is one spot away from the AHL, so it can't be that surprising

He makes Michael Stone look like he was Dougie FRIGGEN Hamilton.

Yeah, no doubt they even had this discussion when he signed - “we’re paying you a million bucks, but you may be up and down all year - but at least the minor league team is in the same city”.

$1 million to play in the AHL is still OK for the guy. I’m sure the Flames expected a little more than this when they signed him.

I still think that Oesterle is better than what Mackey showed last year. Almost every 6/7D comes with holes in his game. That said I think Gilbert is the better option to play on a nightly basis.

I think his $925,000 will soften the blow.

Still time to get him to the Saddledome for today's Wranglers' game.
