Wolf is going to be lucky to start more than a handful of NHL games this year and that is inexcusable given the state both goalies were and potentially are still in on the NHL roster.

LOL. if he was hot garbage wth was Markstrom? Make him sit at home and bring The Wolf back up!

They both were hot garbage. And both can be responsible for a pretty hefty chunk of missed points last season. I understand the sentiment that they deserve a look as a tandem under a new system but that has to have a short leash.

How do you actually win a goaltending job in the pre-season against inferior opposition? This decision was made before camp began and there was no significant competition here.
It is just ridiculous that Vladar has this much stock within the organization that they are stalling Wolf out simply because they think he's worth more than the market will bare. Truth be told, he's a low end backup based on his numbers. There is real risk that the Wranglers won't be as good this year with new coaching needing to get acquainted with the team and also having lost players like Philips. Wolf could very easily struggle even if he's playing at a high level.
Is it better to bring Wolf in while his confidence is high and he's had recent results worthy of promotion? Is it better to leverage his friendly contract status and lower hit? Is it better to get Wolf 25-30 starts this year so that he can challenge for a starting role next or even later this season?
I'm answering yes to all of the above and it isn't even close when I look at the potential payoff to sticking with Vladar here.

I think everyone is too focused on who is here still and why they are when the others being sent down had better showings.
This is all waivers and cap management stuff.
With the impending LTIR for Pelletier/Rooney/Kylington they need to max out the cap to take advantage of the capspace they can accrue once they move these player over.
The others they are waiting for the optimal time to send waiver eligible players down.
Players who are on the opening night roster will be different than the initial roster they submit to the league.

This has nothing to do with Markstrom. Wolf is not competing for the starting job, yet and can only do that if he's brought along to the NHL level.
Vladar was not even a top 60 goalie by many metrics last year and actually got worse as the season went on so let's not act like he would have saved the season or deserves any runway this year.
People need to stop acting like Wolf is just another prospect. He's one of the best goalies outside of the NHL and this team is choosing not to bring him along when goaltending was a huge issue last year.....bizarre.

Vladar was certainly not "hot garbage" for the entire year... he had a poor month of February (which incidentally coincides with when his team was playing it's worst hockey of the year).
He was 13-4-4 with a .905 SV% outside of that month - which considering the structure and system we played with.. was more than solid.

No. Markstrom can go eff off into the sun. When you can't play against the Oiler because they broke you, you do not deserve to be on the Flames. No good.
Besides Sutter gave Markstrom the easier starts and he couldn't handle it.

Coronato, Ruzicka, Duehr, and Solovyov have been great
Wanted to see more from Wolf, Zary, Klapka - I man, they've all been good, but was hoping to be wowed
Pelletier is such a disappointment

3 more to the AHL tomorrow. DeSimone, Pospisil and Pettersen just waived.

Since May of 2022, I think the Flames have an absolutely terrible read on their goaltenders.
Vladar and Markstrom just haven’t been good. The Flames are also in a terrible spot contract wise with them where yeah, they have to publicly back them and support them on the ice because they just don’t have any other option.
…except they kinda do, and they should be more proactive in exploring it.
Wolf’s AHL season last year has earned him the right to play at the NHL level. I’d confidently argue that over the last 12 months, Wolf’s play has done more to earn NHL starts than either Markstrom or Vladar. But, contract status is denying him that opportunity - and that is poor management.

I don't think a 4th instead of a 5th/6th round pick for DV is worth holding Wolf back.
First couple weeks of the season are going to be a rude awakening in net. And for all we know Vladar could depreciate his own value further without strong play.
But let's entertain this course of action anyways and watch things play out exactly as we expect, yet another time.

Some of you have selective memory...
Yes, Markstrom and Vladar both had bad games, but so did Wolf. I didn't see anything from him in the games he played that said "we need to make a change right now, and get him in there".
The goaltending situation is exactly where it was when camp started: a veteran starter that is trying to get his game back, a solid backup that is exactly that - a backup, and a kid with incredible upside that will hopefully take over at some point.

I don't know where you're getting your numbers from but Vladar had an .882 SV% and a GAA of 3.00 from Jan 1st to the end of the year - it was very clearly not just one month and wasn't any better if you pull back to December 1st on.
Regardless, this is not a guy you hang your hat on long term out of stubbornness or return when it comes at the expense of a high level prospect.

Honzek left the game with an injury.
Are you allowed to cut a player that is injured? Or is that just for AHL movement?
Wondering if they quickly cut him before officially declaring him injured otherwise he counts against the cap.

Or the goalies will be fine. If it turns out to be a rude awakening, then they can deal with it. But let's actually play a few games first.
And yes, Vladar could depreciate his value by playing poorly. Conversely, he could increase it by playing well.
It isn't like these goalies have never played in the NHL before.

Yeah, Wolf didn't exactly seize the moment either.
I actually felt bad for Vladar last night. The whole team played like crap in front of him. I doubt Wolf would have faired much better. It was probably a saving grace that Wolf wasn't the one subjected to that.

I got my numbers from removing his five games from February where he let in 16 goals on 89 shots, as I said.
Outside of that month he made 523 saves on 578 shots which is a .905 SV%
